Technical mk2 front and rear speaker size

Yep 4" I think (4.5"?).

I got a lovely pair of Alpine speakers for £20 on special at the local Halfrauds. Am still highly impressed with them.
Have since fitted the amp in the gap behind the radio and the bulkhead (secured with duct tape!), the sub in the boot facing backwards and some 6x9's in the parcel shelf.

Om nomnomnomnom. :)

Infinity have some good 4" speakers (Reference series) at a moderate price. The cone is larger than most 4" speakers due to a clever basket/surround design.

Best sound is if you put 6" speakers in the doors, but they have to be slim to avoid hitting the glass, plus the window winder of the Mk2 could be a problem.

With any speaker, the quality of the installation makes a big difference. One, the speaker should be mounted as solidly as possible (e.g. screwed into the door metalwork, not just fastened to the door card),

and Two, the speaker should ideally be in a sealed enclosure ('infinite baffle'), with no chance for sound from the rear of the cone to mix with sound from the front. Dashboards rarely meet this second criterion - mounting in the doors gets you closer, but better yet, blank off all the holes in the door metalwork with sound-deadening sheet to 'box in' the door before the trim card goes on :)

i got some vibe slick speakers, were in the dash but rollcage is in now! :p

and ucof watch out, if its on the flat bit behind the dash in middle you need to keep an eye out for leakin heater matrix matey! my clifford alarm was there and got drenched in coolant now doesnt work like is should :(

Thanks for the heads up, theres a little coolant over the top of the radio, but nothing that has made me worry about it.

My old transit however, decided to wee all over the floor after the radiator in the heater matrix developed a hole in it :(

I'd agree with the JBLs for the MK2 dash. I got some from Maplins a few years ago (y). Sounds well better than what I removed, but the MK2 dash has zero baffle, so all the bass is cancelled out (n)

I'd say the same about the baffle property of the proper rear mount points too. Need to make a seal between the speaker edge and the trim. Same for the MK1 at the back.

cheers for all your replys!

don't want 6x9's, as it means cutting holes in the parcel shelf, and to me, that seems so boy racer lol

Dunc

Stealth shelf them then ;)

Me, I can't live without tunes in my car and only having standard speakers fitted in the parcel shelf supports would be woefully indequate at producing decent volume and bass! I have JBL 6x9's in my parcel shelf and JBL 10cm's in the front door panels. As the door panels already had speakers fitted when I got the car it wasn't an issue to replace them with better quality items. Also I wired up the rear speakers via an XLR type quick release socket. This means that I'll be able to quickly swap the shelf and speakers over between my two Unos as well as quickly release the speakers when I need to take the shelf out (y) I do also, of course, have an uncut perfect shelf to swap over when I want to have a standard unmolested look to my two mk1s :)
