Hi I'm a newby need help to work out why engine idling fast and £20 fuel for45 miles.
Recently have checked for air leaks/tightened carburetor/plugs&leads/cleaned carburetor.

High idle is always too much air. Could be a vacuum side air leak, could be something as silly as a throttle butterfly not closing (overtight throttle cable?).

You do not have a carburetor (at least, not unless someone has been doing serious modifications to the car!).

I'm assuming Punto 55 or 60.

I don't trust "I put £20 of petrol in......." calculations (I mean, how do you know when you've used £20s worth?)

But possible causes are fuel leak, stuck open (or some twerp removed) thermostat (does the car take ages to warm up?), faulty engine temperature sensor, generally knackered engine (is it fuming from the oil filler cap when hot and running, compression test) binding brakes, misfire............

Is the Engine Management Light on? Symbol like a shower head?

Come back with more info, per piacere........

he cant know that for sure unless he drove the car till it ran out of gas, put in exactly 20 squid worth of gas-wrote down the mileage he has done or reset the mileage gauge, then drive till it runs out of gas again and then see how many miles with 20 squid

Don't be daft. Brim the tank -- the pump clicks off. Zero the trip. Drive for 50 miles. Refill the tank. The trip tells you how many miles you did, the till receipt tells you how much petrol you used. Simples.

car will use more gas if u fill it to full, if it has 40 litre fuel tank capacity, thats 40 kilos of dead weight = higher consumption

Yes, something silly like 0.005mpg difference.

Other than doing as advised there is no other easier, and safer way of working out fuel used to distance covered.

Remembar, it is colder and therefore the engine will be running colder until it runs up to normal temp, have you noticed if it takes longer to get to normal runnint temp? (this could be another reason).

I know mine also has a small increase in fuel comsumption, over the winter period as compaired to the summer.

I have filled mine up with £50 approx (depends on where I get the fuel) and that tank full last for about 350 miles (thats my guideline).

Winter I get about 340 miles, even down to 330miles on short journeys.

Rgds

Steve
