Technical mk1 punto door handle

Ok ... I snapped the door handle off one morning when it was about -4C and both door were frozen closed ..

I managed to get the door panel off (after wrecking the clip that holds the window winder on and figuring out you have to remove the rear window glass guide to get to the 2nd allen bolt on the handle)


My question is :- how the heck do you get the new handle on? The gap in the metalwork to the left of the mounting bolts just isn't big enough to get the big plastic bit through. I tried several times but just managed to get it stuck in the hole and was fearful of breaking it off again.


Has anyone managed this feat? (I am sure you have as people on here remove the handles to paint them). Is there a trick I am missing?

Yeh I saw that thread about the MkII before. There is no linkage as far as I can see, the plastic moulded part just fits over the metal bit that operates the door release (you can open it by just pressing down with your finger through the hole)

I just can't see any way to manouver the plastic bit through the hole ....


Must be missing something.

Yay ...sorted it

The mistake I made was re-fitting the back window glass guide rail before trying to fit the handle. With the guide rail back off then was enough room to poke the plastic actuator bit of the handle through the hole at 90 degrees to the door, then twist it round to face the rear of the car.


There is no "linkage" as listed in the Haynes manual. The plastic extrusion on the door handle simply pushes straight onto the door release mechanism and pushes it down to open the door.


So nice to have a working door handle again
