Metallic noise from brake pedal

Metallic noise from brake pedal

I think I've almost found the source of the noise that's been driving me bonkers since December !!

The metallic vibrating noise that I've asked about on here a few times, is definitely related to the brake pedal (which no one previously suggested). I found this out by discovering if you stab the brakes hard (with your foot) whilst the engine is ticking over you get this metallic vibration sound (similar to flicking a ruler when it's on the edge of a table). It doesn't do it if the engine is turned off.

It also does it when the car is running and I'm not using the brakes, but this is the easiest way to demonstrate it to the garage, which I'll be doing before the weekend.

In the meantime, has anyone got any ideas what it might be ??

have you checked/changed the brake pads? sounds like they could be worn down to the rivets causing the metal on metal sound.

Dill.

Re: Re: Metallic noise from brake pedal

Yes all brake pads were changed just after I bought the car ... I noticed the noise soon after the change but it may have been there before. I took the car back to the garage to get them to double check the pads as well.

Re: Re: Metallic noise from brake pedal

It's Petrol, Tom.

Re: Re: Re: Metallic noise from brake pedal

Do bumps make it worse?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Metallic noise from brake pedal

Hard to tell ... it's kind of a slow vibration so it's not that apparent what else sets it off other than me hitting the braker. What are you thinking ?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Metallic noise from brake pedal

Weird! Mine makes a sorta twang-ey noise when I go over bumps but I know its the CV joints.

Without hearing yours I can't think of what it could be. You say it does it even when you are not using the brakes? Any idea which end of the car its coming from?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Metallic noise from brake pedal

Definitely coming from the front of the car, and pretty close to the driver too !!. It's quite a soft noise which would be masked by the engine if it was too far away. It's really strange that it doesn't do it when the car is turned off ...

Weird! Must be something to do with the brake servo. Might be worth getting that looked at.

How many miles on the car?

metallic noise

Have you checked the long bolts in the alternator?
ARE thay catching the fan.

Re: metallic noise

Hi Trev,

In what way is that connected with the brake pedal ?? Not doubting you, just need clarification ...

re: bolts

Hi Richard.

Re alternator bolts it's not.
YOU said ...The metallic vibrating noise that I've asked about on here a few times, is definitely related to the brake pedal (which no one previously suggested). SO me thinking alternator bolts ! when thay undo thay hit the fan of the alternator and give a metal tining sound .
SO when braking the bolt's may go out further ?..OR i'm just barking mad.

trev

ps I have had this prob on a van

Re: Tom's post about servo...

Re: Tom's post about servo...

You can do a quick check . Engine off, pump the brake pedal several times and hold down, now start engine, if the pedal goes down servo working, if pedal is hard servo isn't working .
