Hello,

Spring is warm here in Toulouse, and I've started using the air conditioning on my 2005 Doblo 1.9 JTD.

The air conditioning works quite well, but a metal-on-metal rubbing noise can be heard when the following conditions are met:
  1. The air conditioning is on
  2. The car is moving
  3. I turn left OR I start moving
No noise if the car is stationary, if I turn right, if I'm driving straight, or if the air conditioning is off.

I looked for signs of rubbing around the air conditioning pump, but found nothing.

The accessory belt and tensioner pulley are new.

Does anyone have any idea what's causing this strange noise?

Belt slipping?
As a quick test when it is making the noise, just before pulling away spray belt only, with WD40 and see if it affect the sound.
Spray is only thin and will soon rub away, it is only to test.

I'll give it try, even though I'm not comfortable with putting lube on a belt 😅

I know what you mean , but it is very thin and rubs off quickly, just one quick burst on the belt area only as it is making the noise ideally, just to prove or not that it is the belt. I am not saying drown it.
Farm shops sell aerosol sprays for belt dressing which is sticky for hard old fan belts.
In the old days dodgy car dealers used to run a child's wax crayon on the inside of fan belts to stop them squeaking.:)

Well, I think I'll replace the pulley bearings, it seems that's the problem. Any tutorial by there about replacing the pulley without removing the pump from the car ?

You think it is the air con pump?
I had a customer who air con clutch was noisy , but you could only get a complete pump at silly money.

On this video, it seems that the clutch is screwed onto the axle: no screw, no nut. The guy made a tool to unscrew the clutch with an impact wrench (see at 10'12").

What is the type of fixing on your specific compressor ?
Is it exactly like the one in your french video?

Have you a photo of the end?

It seems there are several different removal tools out there, but need to know what your compressor is like

See this for a small selection of what's available:

I had a customer with a small Peugeot that developed an Air Con clutch noise, it was caused due to her going through flooded lanes to feed her horses.
On that vehicle no parts were available for the the pump clutch pulley.
Have you been able to identify the make and what parts are available?

@ZaphodB you're right, worrying while watching videos is not helping 😅 Hopefully, things will be easier than expected, here is a picture of my clutch.

If it is dead, a replacement is available from Aut*d*c for less than 20€
