i have a fiat marea weekend 1.8 and has been cosistantly over reving
for about 6 mths.The rev counter fluctuates between 1600 2000 revs.Sometimes but not always by flooring the accelerator the revs go back to normal but only for a few minutes!

It sounds like either your mass air sensor or lambda sensor is faulty. Both of these regulate the fuel flow. It could also be a problem with the idle controller on the throttle block.

Best thing would be to get a diagnostic, otherwise you can spend a lot of money replacing bits. Shop around and see if you can get the cost discounted from the repair.

A Common fault on 1.8 models, the air by pass valve, idle actuator will be sticking, new required. Sits on top of the throttle body.
