Hi ppl, I got this problem, the tachometer (rmp) works fine but the "clock" on the left side, showing the car speed is not working. Got no manual, no place to buy one, no one to fix it. Any ideea? :bang: :worship:
Sorry for my french, dunno the name of that instrument in english, but as i said, is the one shows the speed you are running...

C'mon guys, gimme a clue.. Dunno even what system is using.. Cable? Electonics? What to check?

Do the miles(kilometers)go up as you drive?
Yeap, the mileage is working (small digital panel, including tripmeter, same for temperature). Only the speed is not shown, when I'm starting the engine the indicators goes on their places, only speed is not moving. Got to put it on service for a general check and a problem with starter, anyway, and i'll ask about this again (found new service shop)...

did it start behaving badly, before it broke? OR just suddenly stop working
Man, I have no ideea. That's the way I bought it.

Sounds like the speedometer motor itself is not working or jammed. The VSS (vehicle speed signal) comes from the ECU, and this is ok since the odometer is working. You would need to pull out the instument cluster and dismantle it very carefully to see whats wrong. sometimes the motors get jammed and just moving the needle will unstick it.. the pointer is attached to the shaft of a small motor or actuator..

Owen.

Thanks for replay stylers, still not working (yet)... Found more info: the only working meter is the RPM; the others (speed, total km, tripmeter) are working now and then, and the indicator of speedo runs funny sometimes (dancing around from 0 to 160 kmph while driving 3rd gear @ ~2500 rpm, perhaps 60km/h...)

I had this problem some time ago with another car, and it was the cable, but here all is electronics. I'll have it checked by fiat ppl, even if this will cost me a fortune. :(

Otherwise, I just took the car from service, runs like charm, had distribution rebuilt, all liquids and filters replaced, some cleaning to some parts (turbo things, dunno much about diesel yet).
I just love this car, hope will find the minitechnicus guy to stick his nose into my speed sensor and have it solved. :)

news-in... got it tested, error codes messed up even more all stuff :((
1. there is sth wrong with ABS
2. speedo sensor defective
3. unknon error!
1&2 seems to be related

have checked the sensors, 10V all of them, running wheels gives back correctly .8-1.14V, still ABS light on. speedo dead. i'm going to as well, soon.. :(:)bang:

and quick quizz:
is there another plug for testing it, except the 3 pins (having only 2 connected) one on the left side, above the engine ???:worship:

there are a few 3 pin connectors (depending on model). the main one is on the right hand side when looking at engine, attached to the front of the fusebox cover. there is also one at the far back left when looking at engine.

Tnx a lot Jug, i'll look after tomorrow.. The point with the left connector is it has only 2 pins, side ones.. middle is missing. Mechanic guy said that's why he couldn't make himself a correct ideea. Whatever.. I guess I should change the guy with a proper Fiat service, even for a big bunch of money.

The weird thing about speedo and ABS is that they are not always malfunctioning, dammit! If there are some bad wires, only god will fix it... so i'm starting to get used with the ideea. :bang:

more info required

:worship: I did a search in forum, i guess the sensors must be located on front wheels. Since I'm absolutely outside the car techniques, I have to ask also: are they common with ABS sensors? I mean.. there is only one sensor specialised on both?
I checked with autodata 2005, no word about speed sensors. The only clue I got is a connector, the 26th, going to speedo. The rest of this problem is foggy.

To reissue the whole thing... since i find myself the whole thread pretty confuse.

Problem:
Got the Marea Weekend 2000, 105JTD. ABS light is the most of the time on, the ABS is not working but extremly rarely. Sometimes light is off but still not working. On clocks, the only one reliable is the RPM. LCD counters moves only when driving pretty fast (5th gear, over 100Km/h), and not all the time. The speedo acts like crazy when it does it, jumping all over between 0 and 180. The most of the time is not working at all.

Wht I did:
Not much by myself, my first diesel and even more: my first "decent" car. I used to own some "Dacia", as known as renault 16... :D so.. I really dunno this kind o stuff. So I found a decent service (meaning cheap, at Fiat they are getting tons of money and need to be scheduled, and they are usually changing - you know that - whole parts instead of fixing sth...)

Still, I did the tests I found in autodata: the ABS sensors seems to produce the little electricity required.
Checked also ALL the fuse panels, all fine.
Cleaned the big connector of ECU (using also contact spray).
The speed sensors - did't found any, dunno where they are...

So.. Here we are. Went to service, tested it (for about 12 sterlings in your money):
Speed sensor defective
ABS malfunction
and another "unknown code"

Now... I figured out, reading here and there, that the problem with ABS could be started by that speed sensor. Now you see why am I asking if the sensors are separate or there is only one...

Planning to do (if no better ideea from anyone):

-have ABS sensors cleaned and re-checked
-to find the bloody speed sensors and hack them out
-to figure out the path of the signal (from speed sensors to speedometer) and to check the wires/connections
-to take off the panel with clocks and have it checked.

Otherwise the car runs great and drinks so little that I am amazed :)

The last point, half bad half great: I am planning to take a 1 week trip in Italy on mid. Feb... The good point: I could fix it right there, in its Motherland :)
The bad one: will I reach Italy in one piece with the items I shown?

Got the bloody speedo-mofo' :D

Got it people. It was separate!
Got front sensors out, cleaned, no change. Then noticed the speed sensor, linked on gearbox, under it somehow, so not on wheels. Took it off, spined it, speedo was runing!
So.. the sensor was indeed defective. Need to find one now.
About ABS.. might be lucky as well, I'll clean back ones too, and we'll see after.

The most annoying thing is the diagnostic plug: there is only one, on the left side, i looked after it like nuts, almost put the car apart for it. No trace of any other. Autodata said it has to be on right side, next to ABS unit, well, there is not.

Now. Any ideea if the speed sensor is supposed to be sold WITH the ansembly it comes fixed on gear box, 'cause it seems to me pretty used (there is a little knob on one side, which is pretty wasted.) I mean.. Am i supposed to change both items, or just the sensor will do the job?

I'll be back with news in a few days.

Guess I'm blogging (no replays but mine, doh.. :D )
Got the speed sensor and the other piece getting into the gears box for about 40 pounds i guess.. All fine now with speedo, tripmeter and so on.

Glad to hear you got her fixed! problems should now be far and few between! well thats if you count in normal ware and tare, and if you take goood care of the car. if there is one thing about fiats, the more you baby them, the better they treat you.
