Can someone tell me, is the steering on a Marea normally quite loose?

When I got mine I found it a little light on the steering, meaning I was making a lot of small corrections when steering. Today I thought to check the tyres after seeing they should be at 30psi front and 34psi rear.

One of my front tyres was at 44psi!!! Anyhow, it feels better but still a little loose to me. I have gone from driving a Voyager to a Marea so I expect it to be lighter but not this light.

Just wondering if this is normal or if there may be a steering issue somewhere - and if so where.

Any ideas?

If the car wonders when driving and having to correct the steering then it may be worth checking the lower arm wishbone bushes for wear as this is a common problem. Also check track rod ends for play.

Yep, my wishbones needed fixing a while back. I noticed my marea wandering when I was accelerating.

As that means absolutely nothing to me I better ask a couple of other questions:

1) Are they easy to replace?
2) Are they expensive to replace?
3) Can the likes of Kwik-Fit do them or do I need to speak to my normal mechanic and loose the car for a day or two?

Thanks

If not mechanically minded i would speak to your normal mechanic, although, it is a diy job with the correct tools.
Mornings job for mechanic ,not too expensive for pattern type wishbones.

You have already got good advice. The steering rack in my Marea still feels exactly the same with 121000 miles on it as the day I bought it when the car had covered 12000 miles The front wishbones are a common failure, usually the car will pull one way power on and theother pwer off. Not expensive and a 2 hour fob for a properly set up fitter.

Thanks for the help. I will speak to the mechanic I use regards to this and changing my glow plugs as well (as I have read elsewhere they can be a nighmare to do). At least I can try and plan according to when I can get the car in regards to work etc and try and ensure minimal problems for me.

Thanks again.

I got an advisory on my French MOT about "abnormal play in the steering rack". The inspector said not to worry about it yet though. I guess I'll wait and see what happens. It feels fine to drive at the moment...

I am going to speak to my local mechanic and see if he can take a look early next month (when I have some money) and look to get this fixed. The steering is not great and is a little loose at times. But nothing too bad, but something I want fixing sooner than later.

Thanks for the help and advice, at least I can go to him with some idea of what is (probably) wrong rather than give him a "I have no idea, you tell me" type chance.

Cheers peeps.
