Hi

I was driving along today and after a bang my engine cut out. Its a 1800c 16v.
It will turn over on the starter motor but sounds really wierd.

The fan belts etc are all turning - but the timing belt is not? At first I thought the timing belt had snapped but it seems ok.

No idea where to start - any help much appreciated:)

On further investigation i found that the belt - while not broken it has about 6 inches of teeth missing!

Is this likely to have damaged the engine? I don't really want to go to the expensive of putting it in to a garage - for them to charge me £150 quid or so just to tell me the engine is knackered.

Should I be able to turn the camshaft pulley's freely - and will this indicate if there is any valve damage?

any info much apreciated

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings but I am afraid that your engine is gravely injured. The teeth missing mean that the cam shafts were not timed to the engine for a second or 2 and that bang you heard was undoubtebly pistons bashing valves.:(
Definately a head off job or a second hand engine swop if you find one with a low mileage.
A good couple of hours at a garage, so shop around carefully.
Good luck:(

I world suggest getting the head off and having a look at the pistons, if they are ok then just get a replacement head from a scrappy get it skimmed and stick it on with a new gasket, if you done want to get another head then there are quite a few engines available and you should be able to get a replacement for about £150 - £200
