Having had my Marea for about a month now, i'm starting to check things over a little more precisely (i know i should do that before i buy but that's just no fun is it?!)

From the service history i can see that the last couple of services have required a top-up of the steering fluid, this seems strange in as much as i've never had a car that need that much before without any obvious leak.

I've checked everywhere and can't see any signs of a leak anywhere but i've just had to top the fluid up again.

Is this a quirk of the Marea or is there something i'm not checking that's going to cost a fortune?

Also, every listing i can find seems to indicate that the fluid used should be the red stuff, however mine is green - is this for a reason / a problem / just been serviced by a muppet / or something to be concerned about?

Also, i've heard that the green stuff can be used in any car but some cars are made to use only green. In these the red shouldn't be used (mainly Merc, BMW, Audi). With this in mind, and considering that my Marea seems that it should have red fluid, will i do any harm in mixing them (only that i've got red and i'm too tight fisted to part with the cost of a bottle of green if i don't need to - money better spent on a new set of front wishbones!!!!!)?

Finally, is it just me being thick or do Fiat not list the steering fluid in the owners manual - i can find everything but? If it's there then where?

Thanks in advance.

Hi.
My PAS fluid has never needed to be topped up, you must have a leak somewhere (i wpild look around the pump and PAS-gear).
I have attached a file showing the lubricants recommended by fiat.

possibly just the garage using it as an excuse to increase the cost. dont assume it was actually topped up, but at the same time keep an eye on the level to see if it really does drop over time.

We have had our Marea since 2001, it's never needed PAS topping up in that time and since it was due it's first service when I got it I imagine the fluid in the reservoir was put there on the line in Turin.:)
