I dont use the Rat as much as I should, and as a result the little niggles it has I dont tend to let them get me down, however I think I have a big (read expensive) problem,

A little back ground info.
I changed the slave cylinder about 8-12 weeks ago and all was fine for about 30 miles, then it was hard to get into gear again, I assumed I had not bleed the system fully so I attacked it again, this seems to have sorted the problem for another 30 miles! Now I have bleed the slave again (this time using clear pipe) and im 100% sure there is no air in the system.

Now, when I press the clutch pedal down I have a slight whining noise, coupled to the fact that I cant select first easy and it will not go into reserve gear while the engine is running. If the engine is off I can get gears very easy. When driving I have no problems at all, it goes in all gears easy and has no lack of pull or slipping in any gear.

So what do you think it could be? Clutch knackered, or clutch master cylinder? How can I tell if it is the clutch?

And my slave cylinder was completely shot, it fell apart when I removed it!

Any help and suggestions welcome.

As always thanks.

Check if the slave cylinder goes out in the length it should. Could be that your master cyl is shot also.
Other than that, I can only say - clutch :(

thanks sven, slave goes all the way out, gears were a nightmare yesterday, today not so bad...

while i had a spare 10 mins today i called several garages and got quotes for a new clutch, prices varied from 200 quid all the way upto 650 quid. one even told me it was a 'bastard of a job' on the 20v's

if its ur clutch, like ur clutch plate, it will be juddery when u set off, if its ur thrust bearing itll rattle alot. what are ur brakes like? do they feel solid or do they feel a little spongy?

just hope it isnt ur gearbox going but i doubt that.

could just be that the spline that the thrust bearing goes on needs a clean and that does get a lot of dirt on and can get sticky when the oil attacks it.

She's a monster soon to be revealed :)

If they didnt want it stripping they shouldnt have used nuts and bolts :)

it judders when i pull away, not all the time but it does do it, as for rattling, not that i have noticed..

breaks are a little spoongy, but i have put this down to not being used very much, ie less than 50 miles in 6 weeks... fluid is spot on.

Sorry to hear that mate, but the brakes are awesome on the rat1.

I had 3g grooved discs all round and mintex extreme pads and new brake lines, fitted in early 07 at a cost of £369 just for discs and pads, in total closer to £818 with all the brake lines

well i have started saveing for the clutch, i would love to get the car back on the road next year, Can't bring my self to sell it as i wouldn't get much for it anyway :(

The journey may be a long one, but well worth it if you stick with it from my experience :)

Good on you for having faith in the Rat.

EDIT: Would be good if I could spell!
