Hi there, just a quick couple of questions. My sister has a 1.8 Marea, and the clutch seems to be giving her some problems, it is a 2000 (W-reg) model and what I'd like to know is:- is the clutch hydraulic system of the closed sealed type that bleeds itself, or is it a standard (as all the threads and books seem to suggest) Master/Slave bleed it yourself system? Also can we confirm the fluid comes from the Brake reservior? Many thanks. I myself have a 1999 1.2L 16V Brava with hydraulic system is it the same?

Thanks for your replies. Basically, I live in Northampton, She lives in Torbay and I get all the car questions! She has been driving it around and last week the gears got hard to select, and the clutch pedal felt funny. She could only get it into gears by switching off the engine. Anyway, I got her to check the reservior and it was below the minimum level. Now I realise she could have a leaking brake cylinder which is causing the loss of fluid and as she does not check it regularly the clutch would be the first to suffer, but she is going to get our Dad to check the slave cylinder, so this is where we are at. The clutch does not, and has never slipped and the mileage is only c70K. I am guessing if neither of the clutch cylinders are leaking (no fluid evident) then the problem will be with her brakes which will need investigation.

If topping up and bleeding does not cure the clutch problem then it is probably the clutch withdrawal bearing; if this is shot then it will need a full clutch change; if no leakage from clutch cylinders then leakage from rear brake cylinders likely; front calipers less likely at that (surprisingy low) mileage

more often than anything else its the clutch slave cylinder that is leaking it is on the top of the gearbox under the battery tray you can see it fairly well on the 1.8 and will be able to see if gearbox is very wet around that area if so thats your problem easy to change and bleed up
