Hi I am new to this forum I bought a 1997 fiat 2.4td weekend yesterday I have a couple of questions

1. the temp gauge never goes past first mark when driving but goes to halfway if stood still for any length of time at which point the fan cuts in .I get loads of heat from heater I presume I will need another thermostat.

2. My second question is at start up the car shows temperature as any where from 0 to -6c.This is also shown when I press the temp button dashboard what would cause this.

3 The fuel injector light goes out when ignition is on when the car has not started on start up it comes on for about two minutes then goes out and stays off.Is this normal or do I need to get it checked out.

I know youve probably had these problems before but i need a bit of help on these

1. I think your temp sounds about right
2. The temp you are seeing is the outside temp so thats ok
3. The injector light shouldnt stay on that long so it might be worth getting it checked out.

Not sure about the outside temperature started off this morning at -4 and was -6 by the time I got to work (7 mile drive)

I have read somewhere that the temperature that appears on the dashboard is the coolant temperature and that this can effect the ecu making the car run rich and leave the red injector light on.

Does this sensor work with the thermostat.

How do you remove /clean sensor in the mirror

thanks

What ever you read about the temp on the dash is crap, the temp on the dash and what you see when you press the temp button is the outside of the car temperature. I havent took one to bits so if you do a search you might find the answer.

You need to change the temp sensor at the thermastat housing. Ecu is getting a false reading and ignition light temporary coming on.Advise changing thermastat at same time. This is different to the sensor in the wing mirror , dont be confused with the outside temp and the engine temp.

thanks I was getting the two mixed up does the thermostat come with the temp sensor or do I have to buy them seperatley.

I bought them seperately cost me 22quid for both. The item you read was on the 2litre 20v engine but i would have thought the diesel is the same.
cheers
dave :)

where did you get them for that price I was quoted £35 for the thermostat on its own this morning!!!

The marea has an engine thermostat housing on the side of the block across from the battery it also has an engine temp' sender unit in it about £20 this is the one that tells you the engine temp via the gauge on the dash.

The Marea's also have an exterior temp' sensor for exterior temperature, this is the one that gives a digital read out where the milometer reading is(digital readout), it is mainly for running the air conditioning correctly and is about £20 from Fiat.

The sensor is located in the driver side wing mirror, it is a simple push in fitting in the mirror housing. I am not sure if this is linked into the ECU but I think it may be??

Revised---- On the 96 to 99 model 2litre 20 valve 147 bhp petrol engine the thermastat is a sealed unit and retails at roughly £106 and the coolant sendor between £12-£22 at dfferent outlets. Fiat charge considerably more.Later models R different and this should be taken in to consideration before buying. Again diesel thermastats are different to petrol engines but the 1800 petrol engine may be the same as diesel depending on year of manufacture. confusing aint it.....

managed to change engine temp sensor today havent had chance to change thermostat display still gives a low reading after being out in the car for a good 5 miles does the ecu need to be reset or will it be better when i do the thermostat?

Hi
I just had the same problem and had to change the thermastat. Mine was stuck half open. Once changed the needle now comes half way up the gauge and the heaters work alot better.
Dave

I had to slightly overfill the water in my Marea to make the temp gauge and the warm air inside the cabin work properly.
