i have a 2000 marea weekend 1.6 16v,

the problem ive got is now and again it wont start, it just turns over & over & over but dont fire!!

i can hear the pump priming when you turn the key to positon 1 or 2 but cant hear it as its turning over?

if then i leave it for about 5 min it will start no problems?

could it be a fuel system relay breaking down?

or how do i check that fuel is being brought up from the pump?

please any help will be greatfull thanks guys!!

if you are 100% certain you have a spark when cranking (even when cranking during the fault) then the crank sensor cant be the problem.

on the 1.6 a common cause of starting problems is the throtlebody, especially for cold starts. there is an easy way to tell, if applying full throttle makes it start (after several secs of cranking) then the TB is likely.

Hi, not sure if you have solved this yet but this sounds like the exact problem I had with my 20V Marea.... Runs fine, started fine 95% of the time but just occassionally would refuse to start and just cranked over and over with a strong smell of petrol coming into the car pretty quickly....

My problem was the Coolant Temperature Sensor.... Only cost about £8.00 plus postage and my MAREA has been running flawlessly since.... I changed the Crank Shaft Sensor at the same time, again this was only about £20.00, but I am 99% sure the problem was the Coolant Sensor as this is what was listed in the ECU as erroring as was giving inconsistant readings when we attached the ECU reader....

No idea if your car has a similar ECU / Management system but may well be worth investigating and easy to change.... Might be worth spending just a tenner to try....!!!!
