Can I thank all of you who responded to my original request regarding clutch problems with my 2.0 HLX (2001). The problem was indeed a worn thrust bearing which I have replaced; if any of you live in Cheshire, I took my car to a garage in Crewe (Micklewrights) who did a fantastic job - one of those 'old-fashioned' garages who actually care for cars! Anyway, one new clutch kit and a timing belt (etc) later - and all for only 455 pounds - my car is as good as new.

Glad you got it sorted and for such a good price. What is happening with the stereo problem?

Hi, the car is now running like a dream - smooth and nippy. The stereo shows the correct time and plays radio stations but I am unable to work out how to change it to play CDs; the CD changer loads CDs correctly and is electrically connected but none of the buttons on the stereo unit seem to function (other than the radio preset ones). So, for now its Signal FM or nothing!

Check the cable to make sure it isn't damaged and is fully plugged in both ends, then (providing you have any codes) I would disconnect both components and leave them powered down overnight. Sometimes the processor 'hangs up' and a power off clears it. If you still have a problem then you could try to find someone near to you with the same head unit to try on it. It would at least tie down which of the units is faulty.
