Seems I've left changing out my hard drives too late  She who must be obeyed called me at work to say my PC has 'died' #-o seems it's doing a passable impression of a Norwegian Blue

One of the (distinctly elderly) drives has been noisy for a while and it would seem it was the one with the operating system on it :( Unfortunately I haven't backed up the PC for quite a while.... so lots has been lost ](*,)

However I won't know for sure until I get home and try and get the bast*rd going again. As it was planned/needed anyway I have bought a new 500gb hard drive from eBuyers with another (maybe a 250, we'll see) to follow shortly to give me more space than I'll probably ever use.

But the tricky question is................... do I take this as an opportunity to go out and buy Vista............... or do I just re-install XP :?: :-k

Worst time of the year for this to happen as well :( Guess the wife will have to make do with a box of pringles and a tin of coke for Christmas

Personally I would not recommend that anybody installs Vista. I hate it as an operating system, I installed it for all of about a day and reverted back to XP again.

With regards to the lost data you may still be able to set up the old HDD as a slave and extract all the data you want out onto the new drive - dependent on what the problem is with your HDD. Without knowing what the BSOD are related to its a bit difficult to pinpoint what is wrong with the system (normally I would recommend an OS reinstall for BSOD however given that your HDD has been making excess noise lately I would possibly view that as the problem).

My recommendation:

Find out what the BSOD error message is.
If its the HDD then install Windows XP onto your new drive, then set-up your old drive as a slave and attempt to extract the appropriate files onto your new disk drive.

P.s. You can pick-up a nice 250Gb for sub £40 on ebuyer these days - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/131214
Although it is a Maxtor which some people don't like.

vista is ****! i tried it at the weekend and found out its not compatible with my motherboard! wtf! which means all i can do is play chess! lol, no internet, no 3d games cos vista doesn't see my graphica card. anyway, xp is much better and runs faster.

i wouldn't even waist time with vista untill service pack 1, and u have a fast computer. lol.

Thanks for the feedback guys :smt023

It gets curiouser
I get home after a 12 hr nightshift and start the bast*rding computer up...... it's not the hard drives.... it's XP. It had keeled over and died. Utterly kaput. It had ceased to be it breathed no more. So the good news is that all the data that I though was lost off the drives is still there (discovered after re-installing XP as a trial) and "safe" [-o<
The bad news is I have to start everything from scratch again - re-install everything :smt024  :smt022 I have absolutely not the foggiest idea why XP should have taken an 'eppy'.... but it had :( And.... it's not one of the hardrives that's noisy (as I had assumed) but a fan on the motherboard  Handily it goes quiet after a couple of minutes so I'm not too worried yet

My 'restoration' plan of action is to take the sound advice offered here and re-install XP and forget Vista for now. I've temporarily re-installed XP but only so I can save all the data I thought was lost. Then I have to wait for the post on my days off (starting tomorrow - yee haa) and install the nice 500gb hard drive on it's way from ebuyers and start the whole process from scratch all over again.......

And I thought Italian cars were 'tempremental'

haha xp is mince ive got a stupid problem with the amd cool and quiet drivers for it

when i start the computer from cold it runs until warm and then crashes everything
then power off and power on again and all is fine until the computer gets cold again :D
