When was the last time you got the serviced?
Sounds like the same problem that emma has.

sorry mate but sounds like the camshaft is gone. I had the same problem. It feels like you are sitting on a lawnmower and the exhaust sorta spits and the engine chuggs! I cost me a lot of money to get fixed and the longer you leave it the more damage you will cause

sounds stupid but i haven't.i brought it off my folks they said 2 years ago.

Scott, i hate to say this, but the number one rule of owning a 1.4 is to change the oil AT LEAST every 12k or every 12 months. If you do short journeys a lot then do it more often. i reckon 10k anyway, just to be safe. The oil spray bar that lubes the camshaft gets blocked easily by dirty oil. It sounds like its happened to you, which means you'll need to replace it, and the camshaft, as it'll be worn and scored now, hence the really rough running :(

If yours was last serviced over 2 years ago, its safe to guess that this is what has happened. For anyone else out there with 1.4's please service them regularly, and if you cant afford full services at £100 etc, at least go to National, or kwik fit, they do oil & filter changes for £20.
