What is up with mail order companies? Yeah, it's great, you sit in your own home, find what you want, read reviews, find the best price and get it delivered to your door!

1) I, like most people, work! I leave the house before 8 and get home after 6, so why do these companies insist in delivering between 9.30 and 5? The first you know about it is when you get home to a card through the door, you then ring them and try to arrange them to deliver the next day, you think i'll go into work late and make it up or whatever. Except they can't commit to a time, not even am or pm, so you have to take a whole day off and just sit around all day. If i had time to take a day off work i would take the day off and go to a shop to buy it! So to the next alternative, collect it from their depot, great, i'll get it either on the way from or to work. When do they open? 8 - 6 at the most. So you still have to take time off work!

2) The website says 'in stock', you order it then get an e-mail saying it will be with you in 3-5 working days, great! 2 weeks later you still have nothing, theres no point e-mailing as they never get back to you so you try to ring them. after searching their site for god knows how long you eventually find a number to ring, you then sit in a queue for ages at peak rate when you eventually get through to someone you can't quite understand who's favourite two phrases are 'sorry, were having problems with the computers at the moment' and 'sorry to keep you waiting'- Constantly saying sorry, not a good sign!
When their computers eventually work what do they tell you? 'It's not in stock!'
Keeping control of your curses you ask, 'when will it be in stock?'
'Oh, well i don't know' you push a bit harder 'it's normally a couple of weeks'
Arrrrrgh! i've already been waiting a few weeks! Why could they just not tell me?

Now that is my main gripe, they never communicate with you, just wait for you to contact them!

As you may be able to tell i was supposed to be getting a new amp, i'm now looking for a new supplier! I'm going to do it by phone though, make sure they have them in and can commit to a delivery BEFORE i order!

I wanted it before nottingham :(

Long rant over!

Why not arrange delivery to somewhere there is someone to take delivery during NORMAL WORKING HOURS i.e you work somewhere between 8am and 6pm, so do carriers etc!
What's wrong with your place of work being the delivery point?

Mark.

Re: Re: Mail Order Gripe

i've had things delivered to work before but the problem i find is a lot of places will only deliver to the card holders address. Plus i often have to do out from work so if i don't know when it's coming i don't like to order it, i don't like to ask other people who are busy at work to sort it for me.

The worst company i've dealt with still have not completed an order i placed on the 31st of may. I've rung them so many times and it has come in so many dribs and drabs that i've just given up. I cannot be bothered to get angry with them to try get some compensation, i've just given up. if it comes it comes.

You have to remember i have to get to the main post office in the centre of sheffield for 7am everytime they try deliver something to collect it.

I think it would be so much better if you could have it dropped somewhere near your house and collect it at your convienience. Perhaps the post office who would then deliver a card to tell you it was there. Although they would then need to open sensible hours!

I have had the same problems getting PC stuff delivered on time. I was building a new PC for my mate, i ordered most of the internals from one company and the case & monitor from another, i checked with both companies that all the items i ordered were in stock (i even changed one of the components to get one that was in stock).

I booked 2 days off to recieve the goods, the internal components got delivered a day early. But the case etc.. took 2 weeks to be delivered and ended up taking 3 more days off. B@stards.

I tried (as suggested above) to get the items delivered to work, but alot of companies wont deliver to a different address to the address on your card, for the first delivery.

I am a telecom engineer by trade but due to being made redundant last year I had the pleasure of being a courier for 8 months (thank god I have a proper job again !). As part of my couriering I had the pleasure of being sub-contracted out to DHL for about 6 weeks and I tell you it's not a pleasant job.
You are give a route to do and x amount of packages, the maximum you are allowed to do in one day is about 60 I think. Anyways if you don't finish your route you get a major bollocking. So you get in at about 7:30am to plan your route.
So on your route you start closest to base and head out, you can't fit in a delivery half-way through your route just because someone is working, it doesn't work like that :(
I have been on the other side as well and it is frustrating, but now I see how they work I sorta have sympathy for the drivers.
The thing is nearly all delivery companies will deliver to an alternative address, they just don't tell you, you have to ask. So next some some delivery company drop a card through the door, ring them up and ask them to deliver to your work address.

Ah you have to love it when you get to talk to a person!

I called cel direct

Do you have the amp in stock? - I'll check... Yes

Can you deliver before the weekend? - Our standard delivery should have it to you by tomorrow between 9 & 5. (ok i won't be in but i should be able to collect from the depot or get it delivered to work before the weekend)

Your more expensive, Can you price match? - Let me check, i can't match that price but i can get within £4. - For the service i'm happy to pay £4!

Smaller companies are soooooo much better!

I can understand how being a driver can be hard, but most of the time it's the companies who are the pain. One company i delt with gave their driver a phone, he phoned me as there was noone in and i met him further along his route. How good was that?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Mail Order Gripe

alan - cel direct arent far from me at all(nottm) - you could pick it up at the nottm meet from them - but obviously you'll want it before then

Grrr. I've mail ordered it now! Well with any luck i will get my hands on it before the weekend and probably fit it at the meet ;)

Price Matching!

Always ask about price matching!!!

Some big name shops will match prices even internet prices but foe some reason keep it quiet, I was looking for a new 4MPixel digital camera.

Amazon had it for around £320 but wasn't sure about spending that much without trying it. Went to Jesspos where they had the samw camera for £499 tried it in the shop, very nice.

They tried to get me to buy it, 'Sorry its £320 on amazon'

They said bring in a print out of the page to show the price and that it's in stock and they will match the price!

Re: Price Matching!

Thats good, i'll have to remember that!
