MAF Sensor

Had a diag on my car today and it came up with the MAF sensor being faulty. I've just fitted a new one but now the revs jump up and down like mad. Do I need to reset the ecu first or is it faulty?

Cheers

Take it back and get a new 1!

Tommy K - Have you got the Bottle!!

Had to replace the MAF on my HGT a few months back..

Just plugged it in, and the problem was sorted.

No need for an ECU reset.

I had to do a reset when I fitted mine before I noticed any change, but mine had got VERY BAD!

Take off the earth pole on the battery for 1 to 2 mins. Then put it back and do a test drive. If it was registered as faulty it may be storring the fault still.

Did a reset..the car idled fine so thought...sweet. Took it down the road, bloody thing stalled when I slowed down for a junction. Then every time I started the car it would just stall unless I gave it some gas. Had to restart it about 4 times just to get it home :( Trying a new sensor tomorrow so hopefully that will work!

Thats what my old one was doing before I changed it, did you do the ECU reset as the guide says and leave the car to idle for 5 mins?
Also where did you buy the new MAF from?

Yep did a proper ecu reset. The part was faulty, I got a replacement today. Although, the light has gone out on the dash but when I boot it, the car seems to cut out for a split second and then accelerates. Same when decelerating. Maybe another ecu reset for the new part?

get one from shop4parts.co.uk they have them on offer for around £80

I reset the ecu...engine warning light came on again. Then disconnected the batt for about 2mins..light goes off. Tis weird. It still hasn't solved the problem either. It's like there's a delay when I put my foot down and then it kicks in like a b*tch. So much so it boots my sat nav off the windscreen. It's ok if I have the accelerator on a little bit and then put my foot down, but if it's completely off it doesn't like it all. I've driven about 130 miles since I did the reset yesterday and it's still the same. Could it just be a another dodgy MAF? I don't see how it could be to be honest if the lights gone out.

A bad MAF wont cause the light to come on in the first place! Was it on before you changed the MAF first time around?
I had the same problem you had(car hesitated at around 3k revs) Concluded it was the MAF so changed it for a new one, disconnected the battery for 2hrs, there was no change to performance and I also now had the Diagnostic light on!!!
Disconnected the battery overnight, reconnected it in the morning and turned her over (light went off) allowed the car to idle for a good 10mins and then took her for a gentle drive for a good few miles, then gave her a blast through all the gears to discover all was fine again.
If your light was on previous to you changing the MAF it could be something like a coil pack.

Wouldn't it? That was the only error that came up on the diagnostic though and the light has now gone out. I didn't have this problem when I had the old MAF on, just the light came on and it was misfiring a bit at lower revs and had a slight dodgy idle. It's probably worth me spraying all the connections on the coil pack and injectors with WD40 anyway and see if that does anything I guess.

The MAF will not turn on the injection light. You have a problem somvare else and by the sound of the post abve, I will say its connected to the leads, plugs, or something in that region

Thought I would just tag on to this-rather than start a new thread.

Yesterday having had no problems at all I noticed my 1.8 HLX was really flat and noticeably down on power. Rather than pull cleanly it was stumbling/fluttering from 2.5k rpm right to 6k.

Non of the warnings lights are on-nor have they ever flashed up.

It has recent new thermostat, plugs and lambda sensor-so these are fine. Does this sound like a MAF issue? It's done just over 80k miles and is serviced regularly.

Any help would be much appreciated-I want to get the part and fit it this weekend.

But if my engine warning light was on and not caused by the MAF, wouldn't there be another fault code reading from the diag? I'm not disputing what you're saying, it's just confusing as to why the light goes out with the new one but comes on with the old sensor!

i once had the same sluttering and when accelerating normally the injector light came on and would jolt and stuff... and when u put ur foor down and accelerated hard it would sort itself for a few moments

i put some injector cleaner in and filled up with tesco 99 ron fuel as it has injector cleaning stuff and its been fine ever since :)
