Quick question MAF sensor on ebay for £30 are they worth it? if not which ones are best and cheapest

2005 1.9 jtd - mechanic disconnect the old maf and now its going like a whippet - he reckons it will go even better with a new one

Heard reports on here they dont last long but i wouldnt pay £200 or whatever it is for a new one:cry:.

Ive cleaned my old alfa one with wynns carb cleaner and had good results but i wouldnt actually touch the internal part just simply blast it with the spray as it should dissovle anything very quick.

I rather clumsily cleanned my original working bosch sensor and it does not work at all now. I brought a cheap £36 one off ebay and I don,t know if its paranoia but I think the power curve is completely different and worse, it doesn't pick up as well at low revs.
I have heard that Bmws will not work at all unless it is original Bosch.
Anyway my advice, with hindsight is, don't clean it, and if it needs replacing, buy the Bosch which I think is availaible for around £90, I wish I had!

If your cleaning it dont touch it even with a cotton wool bud its a very thin sliver of glass with platinum wiring on it ONLY spray it, you dont even need to remove it just spray down the inlet with the filter box off while the engine is running.
The revs will drop while your doing this but dont worry its just the mixture getting upset.

The element in the MAF sensor is heated so it is definitely NOT advisable to spray anything inflammable into it if connected with engine running - a large BANG may well be the result!

I would not advise buying a cheap repro sensor, that's exactly what they are - cheap - and no sensor will be better than one of them. Much better to disassemble the MAF and carefully clean the 'wire' element with Isoproponol alcohol. There is also, from memory, a glass zener diode which does not need cleaning.

You can disconnect the electrical plug to the MAF without any ill effects.

The usual suspects for the engine smoking is the EGR valve, turbo boost valve & associated plastic pipes of the turbo boost valve ( little black box that the orange and black pipes fit to. It's adjacent the air filter box at the bottom ) check them for splits & perforations. The turbo actuating arm is also prone to ceasing - located on the bottom of the turbo vacuum reservoir that the orange pipe connects to.

How can you tell/what symtoms if MAF sensor is not working?
Only ask as my multi jtd seems a little sluggish compared to when I first had it.

What effect would it have it you were to disconnect it?

cheers all
