Hi,
theres a very loud rattle sounds like its coming from the left of the engine where the belts are. It starts up fine then after about 10 seconds this loud noise starts, sounds like the diesel engine noise but loads louder, soon as I rev it stops, when it idles again it starts. feels like its driving normally.
Any ideas?

Sounds like your driving pulley is shot. It has 2 parts connected to each other per vulcanized rubber, the rubber gets old and "unglues" it self after some time and the pulley losses the amortization. The sound is in general metal hitting metal. Increases with rpm-s a bit and then goes away.
Let the mechanic check the driving pulley, number 5 in the pic.

Sven,

Once again you are a legend!
I have had this noise on mine since I bought her, I will try this as i have changed the spring loaded tensioner and air-con pump thinking it could be them.

Thanks

Darren

Could similar apply to a hgt? Mine emits a high pitched squeak under gentle acceleration and goes away at a constant rpm?

Thanks for the advice, managed to get a look at the pulley and it looks like the rubber in the middle has come away where it joins the metal and the belt seems quite lose.
Found one on eBay(370230750849) for £85 + 10 postage, but waiting for the seller to get back to me with the part number so i can make sure its correct.
Might attempt to do the job myself...
will let you know how it goes

I had this done not long back on my JTD, i had to have an enhine replaced previous thanks to one of the bastards going!

I was charged 120 inc part and that was from a garage charging £40 per hour labour. May be easier just getting it done at a decent garage?

Stu

Its an easy job to do. Take off the passenger wheel then the aux belt (you need a ring spanner 15mm to depress the tensioner), remove 4 torx bolts that hold the pulley (can be done with imbus if you don't have torx), take off the pulley. Refit the screws, belt and wheel - that's it.
