General Loud Mk2 engine

Hello, recently my mark 2 punto has been really loud. at first i thought it was the exhaust on its way out, but ive found that noise is actually coming from the engine.
when idle it sounds more like a motorbike engine, and it sounds really rough when driving.
ive looked under the bonnet and the engine seems to be shaking around quite abit.
anyone know what could be the problem?

Can't really tell without hearing it. Is it a tappy noise or more of a flat subaru boxer engine kinda noise? :devil:

Sounds like a misfire to me.

If it had dropped a coil you'd know about it, it'd be undriveable.

Check sparks and leads. You may have a ruptured lead.

No engine management light on?

Seems to be getting louder every day. Sounds like some sort of supercharged engine, although (unfortunately) it is not.

I'd say flexi.

Check for leaks - if needs be get someone to put a rag over the tail piece briefly so you can be sure if there is a leak (it will be more obvious).

Got it sorted today.

Turned out it was where the exhaust connects to the cat...

Had completely rotted away. Needed a new cat and new exahust.

Now its as quiet as a mouse

Glad you got sorted. Im a bit dubious about you needing a new cat though . Mainly because the cat is part of the manifold downpipe attached to the engine itself these normally last the life of the car!. How much did they charge you if you don't mind me asking?. And did you see the exhaust parts they removed?.
