After fininshing a 15 min motorway journey i noticed a rattling noise coming from the engine bay
When increasing revs the rattle stopped
So i managed to get home
Left everything to cool down the checked it aftet an hour or so
same thing as earlier quite loud rattling at low revs but stopped on increasing engine speed
after a few mins the rattle would continue at ever icreasing rev speed untill eventually it cut out and fail to restart
Left for 5 mins it would then start with the rattling back to the low revs

Any ideas ?

sorry forgot to say its a 1.6 petrol

Sounds to me - no pun intended - like it may be the crankshaft pulley rubber that has seperated.

Do a search for 'crankshaft pulley' or variations of same to check.

Is there oil in the engine, sounds like no oil :eek:

Might be wrong (Shadey will correct me) but I thought the problem of rubber break-up in the crankshaft pulley was limited to diesel engines...
 
Well, as title says: Loud engine bay rattle. It's very loud, like some machine parts having a party inside a box made of either plastic or metal. "Blamblamblamlkonkblamklonk" and so on. It disappears after revving up to 2500, and comes back when letting go of the throttle. Everyone within 50 meters radius turns around to look... :rolleyes:

The exhaust makes slight puffs, and when reversing into the yard, the engine almost stopped, despite using clutch and engine normally.

The noise definately comes from the left or left/rear side of the engine (when standing in front) where components like the timing belt, waterpump and exhaust manifold is.

It sounds devastating, and I'm booked at Fiat tomorrow at 8am. Djaises that is going to be expensive with price at 120 GBP per hour.

I hooked up FES but no faults whatsoever except the numberplate bulb lights.

If I was to suspect anything I'd go for one of these:
- Timing belt partly shredded, making parts bang into the cover.
- Timing belt tensioner destroyed.
- Water pump (but no coolant loss).
- Exhaust ripped apart around the cat.

Suggestions anyone? Just to have something to talk about at the garage in the morning...
 
Crankshaft pulley? if your engine has the rubber damper type of pulley.

Perhaps. But how do I know? It's -17°C outside now, a cool breeze and high humidity so it feels more like -50°C. So no way I'm going under...

Timing belt loose (rattle against plastic cover) and dried out (and then untensioned) tensioner, hence the metallic whine/rattle. Now it's narrowed down to hope. :)
 
It is alive again, working 100%. The tensioner had self destruct, leading to a slackened timing belt, jumping a tooth or two on the cams - hence the exhaust puffs and low rev issues.

The Fiat garage worked on it for 4 hours, checking everything (including testdrives), new belts (3 of them). They also used timing belt kits, which restored my confidence to the Fiat garage. Last time they wanted to use paint marks for re-applying a new timing belt...
