Some help please. I just got my 64 D running after some time sat idle and i’ve found that I have no 1st or 2nd gears ; although 3rd, 4th and reverse are all good. I’ve checked underneath and all the linkage is moving as it should, ie, the selector rod is turning so I presume the trouble is inside the gearbox. What is likely to be the problem, and is it something I can fix from underneath or does the gearbox need to come out?:confused: I’ve checked my factory workshop manual but it doesn’t help me.

Do you know what the condition of the gear lever box is in and in particular the bush that supports the rod that exits the back, if that breaks down you will never get all gears.

No, I only checked what I could see underneath the car. I’ll make that the next thing to check and get back to you. Is that bush a relatively easy replacement part?

As far as I am aware there are two types of bush. One is like a hard rubber compound that is an easy push fit into the lever box. If the 500D is the same as later cars then there should be a similar bush at the far end of the lever shaft where it exits the rear bulkhead. You have to remove the lever box from the tunnel to fit the bush which is a bit of a pain.

Thanks again.

I just went out to check and when I removed the plate and gaiter it seems as though I’ve got all four. There doesn’t appear to be much wear on that bush so I guess it could be the rear bulkhead bush. I think my mistake might be because this car has a much closer gate than my other car, but there must be wear somewhere in the linkage. Also seem to have some clutch drag that I didn’t notice when I drove it yesterday so that needs to be resolved.

Unfortunately I can’t get the car on the road until Monday as it’s blocked in.
