Sorted out my leak finally.
I've had a wet carpet and seat for a while now and tracked the water to the door. The plastic sheet had been omitted or removed at some point in the cars life, possibly as the drivers door lock was broken. Water drips from the bottom of the door glass and onto the inner door, and enters the car behind the door card.
Does anyone know what this plastic would have been like when new? I've found no info on it.
I draped the plastic sheet behind the inner door skin and the leak is solved! I also replaced the door lock pawl. I found it useful when drifting the roll pin out is to clamp the handle unit gently around the pawl with mole grips to add some weight for drifting, this avoids using a vice as the handle is plastic...
The old ball was stuck inside the rod end as seen in the photos below. After attempting to remove it with pins I gave up and made a small hole in the back of the plastic and pushed the old ball connector out.
So leak and door lock fixed in one day.
