Technical Latest Tipo Disaster Advice Required

Hi Andy,

Sourthern Carbs - http://www.southerncarbs.co.uk/index.htm
&
Eurocarb ltd - http://www.racecar.co.uk/dellorto/

They'll be able to sort you out with the bits you need.

I'm currently planning on stripping the Strada and then getting all the paint stripped, repairing any rust, and respray. Want to rebuild the engine, Guy Croft seems to be the man for Fiat Twin-cams although not sure my budget can really stretch that far and not sure if I could really tackle it myself, having said that I now have 2 engines since I picked up a shed as a donor just incase. Probably a little stupid and I haven't really got space fot it. The Tipo will probably have to go as soon as it gets an MOT.

So do you like the website then?

Thanks for the links.
yes, website not bad matey.(y)
So we both have a Strada to renovate!!

Andy.:)

Well thought I'd post an update, I'm now in posession of an MOT doument but it is a red one.

Can you believe the little monkey failed after all my efforts, both front wiper blades perished, about the only thing I didn't bother checking. Back tomorrow to collect the green one then decide what to do with the car. Original plan was to sell 156, keep Tipo as cheap runabout while injecting money into the Strada Abarth restoration, not sure that is such a good idea.

Whatever you do, sort the Strada. Toss up between the Tipo and Alfa then.Hard one as both nice cars. Write down all the pros and cons of both cars, drive both to get a feel of them, and which ever has the most pro ticks, keep. :) Make sure you include things like running costs, practicality and depreciation etc.
Tipo takes an early lead then??!! :D

Andy:)

Yes MOT Pass.

Yeah really want to get the Strada back to top condition - full on restoration restore or replace most parts. Alfa and Tipo is very tough call. Alfa-looks lovely, drives lovely, very reliable, cheap on fuel and tax, Aircon. Tipo - cheap, great condition 80,000 miles from new, drives well and Fiat twin-cam 8v petrol engine which is a bonus, loads of space and very practical, zero depreciation, low running costs but could go wrong as it is 14 years old. The trouble is I love my Alfa and not sure I can part with it. Suppose I could sell Alfa, restore the Strada then go out and buy another once I've restored the Strada. Decisions.

Well iam after changing my car[ passat V6] for a diesel, because of running costs for fuel are silly. Iam debating a 156 JTD or a BMW. The 156 is low at the front, and ive heard of sump damage on them with sleeping policemen, is this true??

Andy.:)

Not had any problems with my 156 and it is the Veloce model which is lowered from factory, can't remember exact amount might be 20mm. I would say there is slightly more clearance at front end than the Tipo based on my drive where you have to be a bit careful because of a steep ramp on. Touch wood my 156 has been spot on for the time I've owned it, 16 months, only problem has been a blown brake light bulb. I've the 1.9 JTD 115 and get approx 50mpg / 600 miles from a tank. If you like definately take a look. They are excellent value for money and a modern classic.

Hang on.....fuel costs on a (probably over 2.0L) V6 are silly? You got that sneakily ;). You said the Coup was bad enough.

Compared to the 2.8 V6 4motion Tiptronic, the Coupe is economical! Coupe averages 28mpg, Passat 20mpg!! And thats on the motorway!!!!!!!!!!!! Around town, its down to 16.5mpg!!!

Well i was thinking of the 156 2.4 JTD. This is the model ive heard mixed comments about. I nearly bought one a few months back, but pulled out at the eleventh hour.
My mileage has gone right up since ive become a personal taxi service[dont ask, just check the thumb mark on the head], so a diesel it is going to be. So its either proberly the Alfa or a BMW 330d or 530d. Both the BMW's average 40mpg,yet are more then quick enough.
Ive had an Alfa 156 V6, and that was a cracking car. Had the huge spoiler on the back which sometimes i liked, and sometimes i thought was OTT. Engine was silky smooth but again it liked a drink. As you can see, i dont care for small engined cars!!

The Tipo looks really nice, it would be a shame to lose it from the Forum, much rarer and more interesting than a diesel Alfa!

I think you just want to sell it before you get too attached to it...

Surely it's the logical addition to the Abarth family?

Well if anyone wants it make me an offer.

Looking at Tipo prices, lets say a bag of ready salted crisps!!:D
Why hasn't the Sedici reached icon status as it was the best hot hatch out there at one time and much much better then the RS2000 and Astra 16v GSI.

Andy.:)

Yeah it is mad, I've decided it's probably got to go otherwise I'll never get the Strada done - carbs are now off and rebuild about to commence, shame I've got no time to do them over the weekend. I wonder what the missus will think the the smell of petrol on the kitchen :)

It would be a shame to lose the Tipo to the Forum, as the MOT garage said there can't be many Tipos left and this is probably about as good as they come.

Sedicis are being scrapped because of bottom end issues. Ive now found the reason for the bottom ends going.
Other Tipos have reached banger money, and if they develop problems, are being dumped or scrapped.

Andy.

So the one I've got probably has the best of both worlds, the 8v 2.0!

In my view, its the better engine by far. Very easy to tune, loads of torque and pretty bomb proof.
the 16v has oil galley problems. The casting has a sharp edge corner that feeds no 1 crank bearing and the inlet cam. The sharp edge corner breaks off and blocks the oil galley, and starves the engine. First signs are a slight tap, but not always. Guy Croft now reworks this area to relieve this.

Andy.

The Tipo has been provisionally sold, the buyer should be coming to collect the car tommorrow with cash in hand. It will be a shame to see it go but the money will be spent on the Strada. I have a Fiat Forum advert card so will leave that with the car.

Bye Bye Tipo :(

Andy.

Tis a shame, unfortunately what will probably happen is the blokes girlfriend will drive until something expensive goes wrong then off to the scrapper. :( Atleast I've saved it for a while longer.
