lapton disc drive not working help!

hi all first let me tell you im useless with computers, my toshiba laptop has developed a fault its not finding the built in disc drive when i put a disc in it starts to "spin" it but stops after a few seconds nothing comes up on the screen. I have looked in my computer for the disc drive icon but its vanished I have tried restoring to an earlier date when i know it was ok but its still not working any ideas?......please.....:bang:
p.s its running XP

and see if you see your drive and/or if there are any yellow warning triangles
if you dont see the drive then right click in the box and 'scan for hardware changes'

just tried that but it says its there and working ok but it isnt:bang: no warning triangles either

go into computer management as above, locate the disc drive and right click then go to properties and from there go to the drivers tab at the top click uninstall driver and then close comp management, open it again and it will be there with a yellow warning triangle right click goto properties and click reinstall driver this should work, let me know how it goes

It could be a knackered drive!! Had an old CD-player whose laser mount got damaged, disks still whizzed round, but nothing came of it.
