My 2002 Punto is up for MOT and of course on pops the engine management light 2 weeks before hand. Got the computer put on it to see what the fault was. Showed up as a Lambda sensor fault, so purchased and replaced with a new one. Got the lights reset, it stayed off for the journey home but when I restarted the car has come back on again.

The sensor does look slightly different at the end that screws into the exhaust but the treads all match and the electrical plug is the same as the old one. The garage I bought it from used my reg to find the right part so I presume its the right one.

Anyone have any ideas where to go from here?

There is two in the exhaust. One in the manifold and one in the down pipe. I have replaced the one at the manifold. Would they both be the same type of sensor?

they are believed to be the same type yes :)

But we need to know why it needed replacing?
was it flat lining? No preheater?

if the light comes on and its the 2nd lamba (cat check one) not the 1st one - the mechanic who's done it best still have the original

ziggy

Have taken the new one back out and cleaned and put old one back in for now incase i need to bring it back. When I took it out it was quite sooty for it only being in a day or two. Wondering is this what is causing it to show up as a fault. Could be a problem in the mixture?

Will prob have to bring it back to the garage and get the computer back on it to get the exact code to identify the exact problem.
