General knocking/clunking from rear

hi, my marea has started to knock/clunk from the rear..when driving or standing..happens on both sides. anyone know what it could be?
passed its test few weeks back..nothing was mentioned(even though started after test)
any advice would be welcome, many thanks

Check for a broken spring first, as that should be easily seen

that's what I though it sounded like, but 1 is around 6 mnths old & it's coming from both sides. anyway now for sale. volvo s40 on the way

I have just experienced the same problem from the passenger side rear of my weekend.
On checking found that the bottom shock absorber bolt was loose. When I tried to tighten it the nut just spun around at the same point on the bolt. Looks like the idiot who fitted new springs a few months ago put the nut on with an air gun and wiped out the thread at the end of its travel. The nut will not do up or undo so will have to be cut off and a new bolt and nut fitted (using a torque wrench to tighten this time).
