I have just finished spraying my base plates as they had corroded badly...
I've done a little guide in case anyone is thinking of doing the same. Apologies for the quality of the pics, but my batteries on my digital camera were dead, so i had to use my phone.
First remove the cover on the inside of the mirrors. Put the screwdriver in the side of the cover and use the rubber to help prise the cover of, this will stop you scratching the paint underneath.
Do not pull the cover too hard as the connector for the electric mirrors is clipped onto the back of it.
Once the cover has been removed, undo the three torques head bolts that hold the mirror on (For reference these are size T40).
Two are under the cover.
The third one is under the plastic/rubber grommit towards the door hinge.
I left the connector and the mirror attached at this point, but it is probably a better idea to unclip the connector and remove the mirror (three phillips screws underneath the mirror) before taking off the bass plate, so you don't accidently drop the mirror.
The mirror removed from the baseplate, not the best pic, but you can see the obvious corrosion on the base plate.
I used a wire brush on a drill to remove the black powder coating on the base plate leaving a bare metal finish. You can proably do this with sandpaper, but it will take you much longer to do.
I then sprayed my base plates with Hammerite, Direct to rust, Metal Paint (Smooth White).
The colour match is looking really good at the moment (much better than i expected) and the finish is very good, not perfect, but good for a novice sprayer like myself.
They are not fitted to my car yet, as they are still slightly tacky, but i will post a pic tomorrow once i have fitted them.
