Just purchased a 1999 T reg with 62,000 on clock- need help

Just opened the bonnet and realised one of the containers is empty. it is linked to the fan and has what appears to be a picture of a thermostat on it- i am assuming its where the coolant goes but dont really know for sure. There has also been a loud sound from the fan that comes and goes when the car is stationary and i think they are linked- any advice would be great thanks.

I think it is your coolant filler cap. It should not be full to the top. if you can see on the side of the plastic tube you will see Max-Min marks. this is at working temperature: Regarding the fan. This does not run all the time, It is temperature controlled. I think the noise you hear is the fan switching on. This shows it is working correctly. If you have excessive noise check the fan for play. (do this when cold and ignition turned off)
