Cannot agree with the first post more.
However you don't say what your budget is????
Obviously a good JTD will command alot more £££££.
A nice TD100 could be had for pretty low ££££.
Contrary to popular belief these can be tuned to about 125bhp by addition of a tuning module. As it's a big turbo the results will be pretty impressive. Even in std tune it's a pretty fun drive, if running properly, the turbo comes in giving quite a booost. The TD also has a more compliant and I think better ride than the JTD which is more sporty in it's set up.
The JTD is, as already stated, a common rail injection unit and management is electronic as opposed to mechanical.
If you're not going to have a JTD remapped go for a TD100 no question as in std tune it's a much better proposition, just as economical and in my mind quicker than a JTD in std tune. I had both at the same time!
However if you are willing to spend a few £££ on a remap then go for the JTD. However you may need to fit a stronger clutch as the std may struggle with the extra torque as did mine.
Also with a JTD you will be reliant on garages to solve problems when it goes wrong. Having diagnostics, etc. ££££££££££. With the TD you could if you are a reasonable home mechanic fix it yourself or use a trusted local independent garage, as it's a good old mechanical diesel unit. Having said this my TD100 never missed a beat and I sold it.......A week after I had the JTD the air flow meter failed which cost £265 for Fiat to replace.
If you're on a tight budget go for a TD100. Alot of car for not much money. If you've a bit more ££££ go for a JTD and have it remapped immediately as you will be overtaken by clapped out Astras, Post Office vans and tractors.
If you go for a JTD try and get an HLX as the spec is worth having electric and heated mirrors,
heated seats, climate, temp sensor, fog lights, alloys, alarm, immobiliser.
Remapped it's quicker than an HGT and alot cheaper to run.
Use some diesel additive as well. It helps.
Good luck,
Andy
