After about two years of searches and visits to my friendly FIAT dealer with power problems on my JTD I can, at long last, report success. The problem, as it turned out, was caused by FIAT themselves. I took the pump out of the tank on Sunday week and found that someone had replaced the convoluted hose with a straight piece of fuel line which promptly kinked when the lid was pushed down on the tank. So I replaced it with a curled piece of piping from my old Renault 5, took it for a drive and it went like the proverbial. Then it stopped. Eventually, I took it to a local mechanic (behind a Land Rover) and asked him to service it and see what he could do. I figured FIAT would be only too happy to see me coming! Two days later and my car was back on song as good as when I first bought it. The fuel filter was blocked -completely. The mechanic reckoned it had never been changed. €200 for that sort of service?
As a matter of interest, fuel consumption has improved so much that I thought the fuel guage was broken!
And brown stains on the headlining? Check the feed pipe where it goes through the flexible rubber conduit between the roof and the tailgate. Mine had snapped and every time I washed the rear window the water would run down on the headlining. FIAT used hard PVC so I replaced it with a piece of rubber hose from the old Renault 5 along with a 90deg bend and a joiner, also from the same donor. Now I'm happy.
