I can't seem to get the filter off the connection housing. I just want to make sure i'm trying to turn it the right way so can someone confirm. Clockwise or anticlockwise to remove. Also, can i use the screw driver through the filter housing method to aid my grip?
I'm sure this should only be a ten minute job but everything has been very hard to undo so far and i'm rapidly losing confidence in my ability.
Cheers

Anticlockwise to remove

Yes the old screw driver through the filter
Put a cloth under the filter before removing to catch some of the fuel loss

When fitting the new filter put some oil or diesel on the sealing ring on top of the filter

Trev - you are wrong !
Its Clockwise to remove, and anticlockwise to fit.

Marko - use some rope and put it on the filter, so it makes a form as the tool for the oil filter (or use the same tool, but on the top part of the filter), or use the screwdriver method, but as much dow as you can - so you dont damage the thread.

you will need to take the filter houseing off and unclip some pipes and wires too... or u can't get it out!!

if u stand to the right.. buy the UK drivers door... u turn the front towards u...

u can then tip it on its side and it will just squeeze out the gap.

it's a qick and simple job the 2nd time you do it!!

The 1st time I did it.. owww 30mins at least!!!

tip put a rag under it cos some diesel will come out of it and spill onto the exhaust manifold.... should catch fire.. but will smell and smoke a little!

@Tommy - not all JTDs have a clip for the preheating and auto dewatering on the filter, so you dont need to take them off. Depends on the model

What is "dewatering"?

A bit OT
@Swen, I am really grateful for the 'disable EGR' advice. I had no problems since and the engine is running fine.
Engineers from a major car company have confirmed (unofficially, of course) that no damage would come to an engine with EGR blocked. They were just amazed that no emission tests are performed here :)

i don't think my EGR works.. and the car goes like stink cos of it!!... may have summit to do with the black smoke tho :) :)

Clean MAF, kill EGR (replace both if you have money to waste) = No smoke, no hesitation, no flat spot, just more MPG and fun.
