Technical JTD engine dies when less that 1/2 tank...

Hi folks, as per the topic title, our 2001 JTD engine dies if I let the fuel go below 1/2 a tank. It's been like this for ages - I've just kept it topped up, however, we're off to Rome in it in July and I could really do with the full fuel range and the knowledge that I have sorted the problem.

I wondered whether it was either an air leak in the fuel pick up or possibly a failed pick up pump (ie with over 1/2 tank there's enough weight of fuel to push it up to the main pump)??

Does anyone have any ideas before I start unbolting bits?

This may sound daft but what happens if you open the fuel filler and close it at 1/2 tank ?

It's possible that the breather is blocked and the pump is fighting a vacuum.

Thanks for the reply, but tried it and no banana...

I suspect an air leak near the fuel pick up but wanted to avoid exploratory dismantling if possible!
