After have the MOT done on my van I want to remove the Rear Left Leaf Spring Support Brackets *4. Both side and inspect the brackets and clean repaint them .But while this is happening the van will need to be supported.
Normally i'd lift them on the rear axle and put them on stands.
I'm also going to take my newly fitted tow bar off and clean and paint that as well. As its rusty as hell. Think powder coating will cost too much so Black smooth Hammerite metal paint will do the job.
 
Get as much rust off as you can, then treat with Fertan. I have used this and been surprised how well it can convert rust. I have had a piece of mild steel welded to another piece, left on the ground in my garden for a year, (sometimes in pools of water),ttreated it with Fertan as per instructions, then sprayed it with ordinary satin black from a rattle can. 2 years after doing this, i found it this weekend after being in wet conditions on and off for the last 2 years, and the condition is still as rust free as it was when I painted it! I will use this all the time now. Very impressed!!
 
Was crawling around under the van looking at the missing rubber bungs, rusty bits etc... Not the worst at 12yrs old I bet. But not where I want it to be. Will be attacking the wheel arched first. I will clean the scab off then paint rust killer Jenolite type product onto effected areas. Then I will hit it with so red lead paint. then use hammerite smooth white. I was planning to drive it down to the mot place where they rust treat the under body for £70.
So places want 350 etc, to treat the body work.

£70 wouldn't buy much labour I'm guessing treatment amounts to a steam clean if you're lucky, and then hiding all the rust with schutz?
 
Fertan "Think I'm sold"

There is no better or easier way to achieve a corrosion free metal surface than with Fertan. The patented formula targets rust and, once all rust has been dealt with, Fertan then protects the metal to prevent new rust forming. How rust free? Used properly Fertan Rust Converter will produce a standard equivalent to SA3, entirely rust free.

Fertan is perfect for repairing, restoring and protecting any iron or steel in any situation:

Fertan is very simple and safe to use. Inferior products either try to burn the rust off using phosphoric acid or, as bad, try to encapsulate the rust. If you encapsulate the rust it quietly continues to corrode and comes back to bite you a year or two in the future. Fertan goes straight through the rust and is able to recognize the clean steel underneath. On this it puts down a layer of zinc phosphate. Above this protective layer all corrosion is converted to an inert layer of Hopeite (ZN3(PO4).2 4H20 and ZN2FE(PO4) 4H20. Both these protect the zinc and steel below and, as everything is rust free, you have the perfect base for painting or protective waxes.

treatments, Fertan is harmless to plastic, rubber, chrome and other painted surfaces. It is only active in contact with iron, steel
or rust and can be washed off any other surface using just water. It is non-flammable and is safe and easy to use.
Fertan can be used to treat heavily corroded surfaces including sheet steel box sections, sills, panels, etc. It can also be used
on sanded, cleaned or blasted metal to protect the surface prior to painting.

Havn't used fertan but vactan you can get it half the price of fertan worked wonders on out old t25 and my ancient westwood mower

Wot 'e said! I have used it and am impressed very much beyond expectations. I am going to do the most crusty piece of crap steel ever as a control example, but it will be at least 3 years before I can post 'after' pics, as I will just leve it on the ground in the bit of the back garden that floods.
I'm not sure about a treatment for unrusted metal, as it nees to convert the oxide, and when on rusty metal you wash the surplus off with water. The rected areas that have converted turn from brown to black. There used to be a product that was called Trustan23, if you remember it. Fertan is tannin based, i believe. Vactan I have not tried, but may be similar.
The best way to de-rust, is sandblast the get as much well bonded paint on and wax treat. However, Fertan has worked for me; I am not on commission from them either,lol!(y)

The pic is of the piece I refer to above. Note the thinner leg has not been treated, the kit are merely dirty now.
