if the crankshaft sensor or the camshaft sensor is to be replaced does the engine have to come out...ive got a hgt... please help.

If you mean the camshaft position sensor then no, but the timing belt does have to come off so you may as well get that changed at the same time.

Cheers ed...think on an hgt for the timing belt to come off its an engine out job...unless some there is another way to do it...any mechanics out there

It's not engine out to take off the cambelt, it's just fiddly

It used to be an engine out job on the HGT, but it can be done with the engine still in... most places do this anyway. Even FIAT do, but charge you engine out prices from what I've heard..
Still not a cheap job by all means.
Worth getting the tensioners & waterpump changed too... saves hassle further down the line.

Engine out is not required, they now undo the engine mounts and push the engine over within the engine bay. Costs roughly £400 to have the cambelt changed plus afew other bits like tensioner and waterpump on the HGT.
Powerfiat is highly recommended by people on here.

so to replace the camshaft sensor i dont have to take the engine out...think i will get the lads will have a bash at getting my car back on the road this weekend then...has anyone replaced the camshaft sensor..any tips

was going to powerfiat later this summer for the works ...but power steering belt snapped...which was repaired but the car wont start..think its camshaft sensor thats gone as its not sparking

crankshaft sensor is on the flywheel and easily done, mine was changed today (no joy tho), the timing sensor on the cam involves taking the belt off and removing the wheel attached to the foremost cam (true terminology escapes me), replace sensor and refit belt (replace is prefered to refit), that is whats next for mine. will let you know how i get on.

Jayfish...think ur going through same problem..ive spoken to a couple people and they think its got to be the cam sensor...thats why the sparks arent producing a spark....been told its a big job to replace it....does anyone know how long it would take to replace the sensor...say if it was a mechanic that hadnt worked on fiats b4...lol...and is not me

MG, powerfiat take around 3 hrs iirc for a cambelt swap, so add in another hour for the cam position sensor for pro's that work on tha engine day in day out! a non hgt experienced mech i would expect to take circa 6 hrs or so
you can do it yourself if your competent with the spanners, but it wont be easy. you will need a full cambelt kit, water pump, aux belts and tensioners aswell as the cam position sensor and get your hands on some cam locking tools aswell.
ill be undertaking a cambelt and clutch change myself at some point in the not too distant future, but i have the benefit of my mates garage (one he runs rather than attached to his house..) to work in with a massive selection of tools, ramps etc etc (oh and cost price on parts too)
to do it you will need to move the engine over to the pass side as much as possible, remove the cambelt (once you have fitted the cam locking tools) then remove the timing pulley for the exhaust cam, thats where the ensor hides on the hgt) and then refit your new bits n bobs

paul sorry u did mate..but what im trying to establish is whats involved with the sensor change now i know what the problem is and how long it would take. should have continued the last thread so i do appologize. just want to make sure i make the right decision b4 getting rid of my beloved hgt...saying that have a new car waiting on standby but hgt has memories of my youth lol heart says keep her brain says get the subaru.
