..Gearboxes absolute tosh in the cold weather?

Really struggle to get any sort of smooth gear change, in any gear!

Anyone else suffering? and wat can i do. Ive already changed the oil!

cant say mine is any different at all, though it was reconditioned and a new clutch put in about 5000 miles ago. might be part of it. I think its just wear tbh. if oil change did nowt, then its a big job i'm afraid.

What grade was the oil thats been put in, if you know ?

All my Bravo gear boxes were OK, but I had a Tipo 1.4ies that's box was very sticky/clunky until it warmed up.

A second Tipo's gearbox also went bang after 28k.

on a freezing cold morning third gear always crunches the first time i engage it. other than that its fine.

Didn't you ask this before?

The box on my 1.6 is sweet as anything, like oiled silk.

Good oil and a good clutch help.

If its crunching into gears that could well be a clutch issue rather than a box issue.

No i have not asked this before, was only just pointed the way of this website by a Bravo owning friend.

The gearbox is all good when warmed up, just pure crap for a good 20 mins before this though.

I dont know what oil they put in, but im going to buy the finest oil and stick that in, as no doubt the monkeys at the local "Nationwide Auto Centre" put the cheapest stuff they could find in!

The gear box never crunches. Just "notches" and there is a slight resistance from something, sometimes.

No touch wood, mine is fine. Not driven it in the past 2 weeks mind you but before that, it was smooth as ever.

Famous last words :)

My 1.4s box is similar to your description of being notchy, worse when cold but only mainly when engaging first gear, sometimes it is extremely hard to get it to go in and depressing the clutch a few times makes it easier. Seeing as the gearbox has been changed due to the main bearing or whatever going why is it still notchy? Intuition says something to do with the linkages? Could this be the case as its only first gear that suffers, clutch has been done too (judders slightly when cold though until warmed up slightly) advice for me would be great too.

I'm sure someone asked the same about 2 weeks ago. Never mind.

Castrol syntrax is the stuff to use.

The notchyness can still be the clutch dragging.

Does it crunch into reverse alot?

It's usually on 1st & 2nd. It's been like it since i got the car, I've changed the clutch, the only thing that got rid of was the crunch going into reverse. I then had a full service done, and got them to change the box oil aswell. This didn't seem to make any difference.

I'm going to buy the stuff Tom has mentioned as a last resort. I'm not really bothered to be honest, something i'll just have to get used to, unless it's going to make my box blow up!

It's only done 36k miles, so i'll be pissed if it does!

I was also thinking of a worn syncro, as at certain revs it slips in no probs.

My 1.6 Bravo is exactly as yours, Genghis(juddering, and first gear trouble etc..sometimes at traffic lights!). Though i been told will need a new clutch within next 4-5 months(i drive like a granny), so maybe if people having this trouble, as someone said, will be most likely clutch prob. :(

My 1.2 is exactly the same ^^
Only thing that mine also does that no-one has mentionned yet is that the accelerator seems 'jerky' til the engine warms up. The pedal doesn't seem to move freely and smoothly, it kinda moves in jerks, sort of a centimetre at a time!! (very uncomfortable, especially in traffic!) Once the engine warms up its spot on!!
