As the title really.

I've recently started noticing oil seeping from between the block and gearbox and its just occurred to me that the oil may be too thin, hence the seepage.

I'm not sure what was in the car prior to my ownership but ive been topping up with 5w30 for the last 6 months. Maybe put a litre or 2 in over that time.

I suspect wherever its seeping from will need sorting anyway but could the thin 5w30 be getting past the seal easier than maybe 10w40 would?

What's the recommended grade for the hgt?

Cheers

5W/30 really is too thin, that's probably why you're using a lot....

Like most 90s / 2000s Fiats. your oil should be a decent 10W/40 semi-synthetic (e.g Selenia 20K, Mobil, Comma Eurolite....)

For caning the engine or in hot climates you would go even thicker (10W/60).

I agree, 5w30 is simply too thin for these engines. The factory specification is a 10w40 oil. You're best to drain and refill with a good 10w40 and change the oil filter at the same time.
