Forgot to mention. iPhone works fine with the iPod cable. It just won't charge
thanks.

QUOTE=BigRob69;2323577]Hi, firstly apologies if this has been answered before but this is my first time using the forum.

I have a 57 reg panda 4x4 with the original blaupunkt hu with radio/mp3 cd player. I also have the fiat aporoved iPod cable which charges my iPod and treats it as a cd autochanger. I can control iPod via steering wheel controls

This worked fine with my 5th gen iPod but unfortunately this iPod broke so I have got new 160gb iPod classic.

I can use my new iPod with the cable and use the steering wheel controls and hu to change playlists etc as usual but the big display on the iPod screen that says track playing only shows the song that was playing when u first connected it and does not update as new tracks are played. There is small text underneath the large text which scrolls with current track playing and artist but not with album details and it's a bit small to read when driving.

Is there a firmware or cable upgrade available for the 57 fiat panda iPod cable/blaupunkt cable that gives better functionality for the newer iPods and in particular will charge my iPhone.

If not I am considering a tom tom car kit for my iPhone 3g. This has a 3.5 mm line out socket for aux input to my blaupunkt hu. Which aux cable would I need for this?

Thanks very much in anticipation of ur help and apologies if I've posted this in the wrong place. Forgive me. I'm a newbie!

The charging issue is because Apple have made a change to the way iPods are charged, so not something that can be fixed (so far as I know) by HU firmware.

iPods up to the 5th generation could charge (and connect to a PC or Mac) by either a Firewire or a USB cable, using different pins on the iPod end of the connector. The original Apple charger used the Firewire pins (because USB v1 sockets on older computers only had limited current available) and most (if not all) third party units only supplied power these Firewire pins. (If plugged in to a computer via USB, older iPods would then charge from there too, but the supplied mains charger had a Firewire connection)

The iPhone and iPod Touch (mkII), and latest Nano and Classics can only be charged with USB part of the connector and do not support Firewire at all. They cannot be charged using older Apple chargers. The Fiat/Blaupunkt adaptor (or many other non-Apple products, eg from Belkin or Griffin) does not supply power to the USB side of the connector, so a new Ipod will play but not charge. Generally, only newer third-party products that say 'works with iPhone' supply charging power via the USB part of the plug.

Clear as mud?

there is an adaptor available from Dension, and generic (Hong Kong) and from some US outfit with a name beginning with S (Sch--?)
They are £10-£30 if you search on ebay
you might search on 5V which is the new charging regime.
They plug into the old one, in line with the ipod.

My new iPod charges and plays with the old cable just doesn't update the big text with current track playing. Current track playing displays in small text at bottom of screen but only displays album and artist.

Will this adaptor u speak of from Denison charge my iPhone 3g?

I've just bought a Scosche passPORT adaptor from Expansys.com which allows charging newer iPhones with accessories that don't usually work. You simply plug this adaptor between the dock cable and dock connector of the iPhone

Thanks guys. Have ordered the adaptor from eBay. Half price of one from expansys. Will let u know how it works out. Hoping it means I can stop borrowing girl friends itrip to keep my iPhone charged whilst using my fab new Tom Tom app.

Thanks again
Rob
