Any electric guys heren who can help me understand why intermitting wiping is not working

My 1987 4x4 has the opld style wiper motor with external interval relais

Mine has only continue in wiping position 1 and 2

Should ge like
Stalk posion 0 wipers not on
Stalk position 1 continious wiping
Stalk position 2 continious wiping for some seconds, followed by interval wiping

Relais looks burnt on inside but works vontionous, test with another used relay wipers not working at all.
Relays and motors are not available or very expensive.
So want to test wiring and connections before i try to find a replacement relay or wipermotor

Attached pics of wiring diagram and my own drawings of Relays internals.
My question
How relay and motor should work when stalk is in 1 or 2?

How should bimetal in relais make intermittend connection
In intermittend posion 2 there is no negative ground to relais.

Model
4x4
Year
1987

if your auto park works on the wiper, just swap the relay out with a timer circuit. you can get ones that send out a 1 second pulse at a setable amount of time. this can work great to give the effect of flicking the stick down for a second then returning it back to the off position. when the wiper motor will then auto park.

i have put one on the rear window wiper and its amazing.. how it should have been from factory. i will try to find one for you...

Found a brand new original relay.
Installed it: still no intermittend wipe.
Both positions continious wipe.

So there must be something wring in wiring or inside wiper motor.

As i dont understand how it should work I dont know how to connect motor to bench test. Any help?

my thought is that it is inside the wiper motor gearbox causing the issue. it may be the small brushes that have worn and bent to touch the main live fooling the motor into thinking that it is constantly running..
i would take it apart and have a look. its only held in with 2x 10mm bolts and the one 24mm plastic nut around where the wiper arm sits.

Did bench test with motor and relais and direct wiring.
everything worked as it should.

After some testing in car turned out signal from steering columm stalks is wrong. I think at some point a colomm switch of a later production year panda is installed.

Now need to figure if its posible to change internals or need to find a new switch of correct model and year.

Hi,

I have a 4x4 Sisley 1987 and have problems with the front wiper motor too. It looks like my car is missing wiring for the wiper motor. Could you tell me if you have a big square connector for the wiper motor? Where is the intermitted relay located?

I bought this car as a unfinished project.

Thank you

Yes, 1987 4x4 has the old Style 4 pin wiper motor with external interval relay.

Interval relay is located in fuse box below steering columm.
On top of box iare 4 relais positions
left to right :
No 1 square relay = rear Window heating
No 2 round relay forgot function
No 3 square relay, = wiper interval
No 4 empty position

This wiper motor and relay is used into 1988 and also on older panda models 30 and 45, also on seat marbella and seat terra

After approx 1989 they changed to a wiper motor with integrated interval, so no external relay. It not easy to change to this type as you Need rewiring and other steering column switches

Thank you so much for your reply! Would these wiper motors still be available to buy somewhere? I got many spare parts with the car but no old style wiper motors.

Thanks again!

Stil not fixed my interval wiper
Found in eper 2 different numbers.
Ordered 181117880 but didnt help.
After testing how it switches contact in stalk positions it seems its not the correct one.
I will send it back and order the other partnumber to test.

How can i check in eper when part is changed ?
