Brand new member here, so this is my first post. Hope some of you have some ideas...

I've just recently bought a '75 Fiat 500R and I live in Belgium, where apparently I must have a red fog light on the left rear (doesn't have to automatically come on with the high-beams, seems like a manual switch is good enough). If not, I need to drive it as an old-timer. But I don't like keeping something in the garage, I'd rather "beat it up" a little, like I did to my old Mustang in Canada.

Has anyone done this? Any way to make it look decent?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum !

Not sure about the fog light thing, here in the UK if it wasn't fitted at the factory its not required.

What are the rules in Belgium then ? Whats the 'old timer' rule ?

Thanks for the welcome!

From what I gather, the old-timer rule in Belgium makes it that you can register a car without worrying about having a yearly inspection on exhaust emissions, chasis integrity, brake and tire integrity. Ok, I agree, probably all good things to have checked but quite a hassle.

However, as a result, you can only drive it within 25km of home and between sun-up and sunset. Kind of a bummer, so I want to register the car as a "daily driver". Hence the need to fulfil this Belgian requirement for the rear fog light.

Hi i have no experiance of the 500 but basic wiring principles will apply

its "only" 21 watt im not sure on the wiring harness and capacity so would play it safe and power it from a automotive relay

Pin 30 is fused (+) supply from the Battery

Pin 85 is Ground (-)

Pin 86 Is live supply from switch (your fog light live via a switch)

pin 87 is To the reversing light

this shows a diagram for front fog lights but its essentially the same all you need to remember is you need a smaller fuse

so what you will need to do is

locate the relay near your fuse box run a fused live supply to it..... (pin 30)

locate the live supply from the side light circuit (the wire that powers the parking lights on the left of the car) and tap into it using a scotch lock or solder a wire to it, and run to where you are having your switch, From the switch you need to connect this to the relay (pin 86) (you in the UK must have a light telling you the fog lamp is turned on) so the switch will have a 3rd connection to Ground to power this light when turned on

connect Pin 85 to ground

run a wire from 87 to the back of the car and connect to the (+) terminal of the fog lamp and connect the other side of the lamp to ground

hope that helps :)

for 21 watt single bulb you should get away with a 5A fuse

there is a UK e-bay seller that sells LED fog light units for trailers if they are of interest

:eek: Blimey, never heard of that ! What an annoyance, anyway, im sure Andy Monty's post will help.:)

Indeed, Andy's post gives me a good starting point (thanks Andy). Now up to me to execute ...

I'll post some picks once I get it done, who knows it might help others in Belgium.

no problem glad to help

with those relays you will need some blue spade connections

i would suggest you buy a set of decent ratchet crimping tools to ensure a good secure connection...

like these (one of the best investments i have made for wiring on teh car
