Injector Warning Light On. Best Options??

My 1.6SX Brava's Injector Light came on whilst driving, and the engine feels like its only running on three cylinders (I may be wrong, but it's certainly rough and sort of "lumpy" sounding).

I've checked out the repair guide, its a little sparse.

I'd be glad of any advice as to getting it fixed.
Do I need a Fiat Main Dealer garage to get this done, or would any competant garage be able to fix it?

Ten minutes before the warning light came on I'd filled up with petrol. Could contaminated fuel be the cause? How could I check for this?
Or is it more likely to be an injector that's kaput?

If something similar happened to your car I'd be grateful to know how it was put right and the costs involved. I'm assuming this will be expensive. Should you replace all the injectors (if one fails), or just the faulty one?

I doubt there's a cheap remedy, but I'll check the bleeding obvious tomorrow, meanwhile any ideas how best to proceed much appreciated!

Any garage that can do a diagnostic check will tell you what the problem is

Rubbish.

You will need to go to a garage with the FIAT SMART diagnostic, a simple diagnostic will NOT suffice.

Here's hoping that you have an independent specialist nearby as from memory, FIAT charge £80+vat just for the plug-in.

Thanks guys, I guess I knew that would be the way to go, but needed confirmation.

I doubt my local garage has Fiat Diagnostic equipment so its a trip to my Fiat Dealer. I don't suppose it'll be cheap, but I've no alternative.

I was hoping it might just be some crap that had reached the injector, which may blow itself away. But I've recently changed oil & air & fuel filters so that was probably just wishful thinking!

Such is life.

Whel Im not from UK, but ppl say they where quoted 40 for it at Fiat, and its 20 at AngelTuning for BOO members.
And it was 1997 ;)

Injector Warning Light On. Best Options??

FAO Sven & RR,

just got back from local Fiat Dealer. They did a diagnostic and found one error code, namely No.4 Injector. Cost me £38.50.

They advised I have all four Injectors renewed because they often do one, only for others to fail soon after. Cost per Injector £117+VAT+ Labour (£60 an hour).

I said no thanks and took it to my local Injector expert. They said the same thing but charge £70+VAT per Injector + Labour (£40 an hour).

Are they right about doing all four Injectors at once? I tend to believe them, but it's damned expensive.
What would you do, All four or just the one that's buggered?

You can change one, but the other 3 are old and dont “perform“ like the new one so it may come to some diferences in the engine work. I would change the one thats faulty and leave the rest, so when they go change the rest.
But thats just IMO. The right and correct solution would be to change all.

Sven,

changing just the one is certainly cheaper, but if the new one "performs" differently from the three old ones maybe that explains why so many end up having to change the old ones within weeks.
I'd hate to have to it fixed, only to go a few weeks and then have the same thing happen again.
I think I'll dig deep and have them all changed. At least I'll only pay Labour costs once. Evidently Labour won't cost much more changing four than it would doing one.

Can't say I'm happy about it. But I might be able to afford it if I sell a kidney!

The spray pattern and fuel flow of the old injectors will be somewhat different to the brand new one. You'll suffer from poor MPG if you don't change all of them at once.

Tom,

looks like I'd best say goodbye to a kidney then!

Stuart.
