Injector problem..

Well the other day I was goin down the road to grab some shopping from Tescos, on the way back the car begins to splutter, of course stupid me ran the tank dry. "whoops"

I managed to make it to the garage to whack some fuel in, but after that the injector light came on, and the injectors are running VERY rough from the sound they began to make when I drove off.

Too start off with, there was a loss of power, the car would misfire, total power loss followed by a sudden surge of power, and continuous roughness sound.

So I gathered I'd dragged some dirt into the injectors (quite a bit to cause that kinda thing) and bought some fuel injector cleaner, whacked a load in and began to rev the car nice and hard in my driveway, to get it flowing through.

Overtime, about 5/6hrs it began to clear up, the injector light came on and off, it sounded better, it began to clear up, eventually the light went off completely, the engine sounded like it was before!! Great I thought.

For a few days it ran fine, occasionally spluttering, which I put down to the last of any dirt clearing.

Then today, its started all over again, the injectors sound rough, although no loss of power.
It begins to clear when revving it in the driveway after a while, but when taking it out onto the road the injector light comes back on and the injectors sound rough again?!?!?

Have the injectors gone or is it simply a case of excessive amounts of dirt pulled into the injectors and its just a matter of time to clear it?

I'd rather its the latter of course. :)

Thanks for any help.

Lots of text but you did not say
a) what your car is
b) age and milage

Whoops got home from work late last night, was just browsin before I went to bed, and rambled on about this annoyin problem.

Bravo - 1.6 16v (T) 1999 Mk2

89,000 miles on the clock.

Just rang fiat, apparently 1.6s dont have fuel filters?!?!

Goin to the mechanics to find out what on earth it could be.

your filter.

First excuse my bad english, i'm french from Paris.
I think your gas filter is under the plastic plate near the back of the right tyre.
It's a metalic filter; need to be changed every 35 000 km on 1.6 16V.
To access it theres 3 or 4 screw to put unscrew.
very easy to change theres a clip on system to put in or out the filter. when you put a new one; just be carrefull to put it in the good way ( it's write on).

Re: your filter.

Nope, no seperate fuel filter on the Mk2 1.6 16v.

Its all built into the fuel sender inside the fuel tank and apparently thats not sold as a replaceable part.

I've got a '98 1.6 SX Bravo. Is it easy to replace the fuel filter or not?! Seems to be some indifferences in this matter...

Anyone got any pics?

I have almost exactly the same problem. Tank ran low and shorlty after filling up the injector light came on, sporadically at first now it comes on when I accelerate and blinks off when i lift off. It ran really rough, injector cleaner helped for about 2 days now same is happening.

I figured one or more injectors is knackered as it's a Mk I 1.6. Would a fuel filter change help or is that just wishful thinking?

The 1.6 16V engine does have a fuel filter. It's where Stephane says it is, and they cost @ £12 from Fiat.
I changed mine a while ago but whilst it won't hurt to change it I doubt it will solve the injector problem.
I ended up changing all four injectors due to one of them failing, a very expensive job!

However before you do anything take your car for a diagnostic at a Fiat Dealer. It costs @ £38 and it will reveal why the injector light comes on.
I did this and one "error code" namely No 4 injector came up.
Only by a diagnostic can you be certain what the problem is, it could be something other than an injector, although your symptoms sound almost exactly like what was happening to mine!

I hope you have better luck than I did!
