had this problem a couple of weeks ago whilst stuck in a field in cornwall....

i couldn't hear the fuel pump either and as i was fairly new to coupes phoned the AA.
after a little fiddling around the AA man announced that the fuel pump was now working ( he'd given the pump a little persuasion with a hammer....which is understandable except for the fact that i'd kinda thought the pump was completely inaccessable....so....er....what was he hitting?)

and the problem was the 'yellow' connector below the dash to the right of the steering column, he cleaned it up and snapped it back together and 'bingo'...it started first turn....all back to normal !

....until yesterday....same problem i thought.....

went underneath, had the ignition switched on and could hear the pump

so i looked at the connector, wiggled it, undid it, looked at terminals, all looked ok, put it back together....but nothing.

what should this connector look like ?

it seems a little wierd that there is several (6 or 7) wires going 'in', but only 2 terminals inside and only 2 wires coming out....does anyone know if this is right ?

can anyone think of anything else it may be ?

would greatly appreciate any input/advice 'cos i really do need to get to work on monday.....!

cheers

I had a very similar problem. The connector looked fine, but still the car would fail to start on occasion.

In the end I removed the yellow connector and soldered the wires together. Then I covered them with heatshrink.

I have not had a problem since and that was 6 months ago. (y)

My connector only has 2 wires going in and 2 wires coming out though. Which sounds different to yours.

The yellow connector under that dash is the immobiliser wiring.... be careful you get the right yellow wires though as the airbag is also yellow!!

If the immobiliser is playing up, or stuck on, the fuel pump wont prime (you'll hear a short buzz when you turn the ignition on)

If that isnt your problem then have a look at the cam or crank sensor. What model of coupe is it?

Also, the pump is in the tank, and is accessed through the black plastic cover you will find under your boot carpet, although to get to the actual pump you need to remove that plastic cover, then undo the ring that holds the pump and swirl pot assembly in the tank, disconnect the lines and pull it up through the boot floor... I dont know why the AA man felt the need to hit it, this wont sort it I can assure you!

thanks....
i have a 20v coupe

the pump 'is' priming, so i can rule that out

i'll have another look at the connector.....although i'm still a little confused as to the number of wires.....and a little concerned about doing any wiring myself....i hate car electrics !!

as for the AA man....maybe he was just making himself feel better !! to be fair he got it going tho' !!

er......cam sensor ? crank sensor ?

are these easy to get to ? had a quick look thro' workshop manual & couldn't see....

can you see what's wrong with them or is it just a case of replacing ?

forgive my ignorance but what is the Lambda sensor ?

hmmmmm.......

ok, re the 'yellow connector' there are 'no' yellow wires......

on one side there are 2 wires : green and black
orange

on the other side 8 wires : green and black
orange
red
brown
black and red
black
green
purple

the green/black and the orange connect to the corresponding colours the other side.....the rest.....er....well......don't connect to anything !

if the pump is priming then you can rule that out as being the problem.

the injector light will not illiuminate for a faulty fuel pump (i think)

as you say the problem is only starting the car and not had any running problems it would suggest the Cam Phase sensor, which is not easy to change.

i would suggest you try and get a diagnostic on the car to confirm before either you or a garage start trying to change the sensor.

if you know someone with a widget it should be able to help you diagnose the fault :)

Thanks,
Ry

cheers mate

but i'm down in the a*se end of east london !

where are you based ?

if your code light is remaining lit then it wont start due to the immob. wiggle the wire for the aerial that is around the ignition switch. if in doubt, wildly wiggle every wire to the left of the fusebox.
