This warning light came on the first time while driving to work last week, it went off after a few minutes. I looked it up in the manual and it said not to worry. However this week it came on again and stayed on until I stopped the car, it hasn't lit up again since then though. Is this anything to worry about? I'm planning a long motorway journey this weekend...

I should probably say I haven't noticed any effect on engine performance when the light comes in, so I don't know whether I should be concerned.

Buy a genuine Bosch one designed for the Punto for £60 and fit it yourself - it's only one electrical plug and you just need a 22mm (I think?) spanner. Wouldn't reccommend universal lambda sensors, I've experienced problems with them.

iv had that problem before. i have found out that after i put in fuel injection cleaner the light likes to come on. but your car hasn't cut out yet. i took it to the garage and they said it was the egi valve that gets stuck and lets to much air or petrol in to the engine one or the other.they took it out and said i had to replace it but now it hasn't come on 4 a few months.

Hi
The light came on in my punto the other day as i was driving along, i continued my journey home. Once i parked it in my drive, that was it. Now the car will not start. I've been told that the problem is related to the injection sysytem.
Anyboady got any ideas? Could this be caused by this?

Andy, sounds like either a Lambda sensor problem or a sticking EGR valve (if your car has one). Unlikely to be blocked injectors, fill up with Optimax a few times, that'll help clear any blockage there may be.

Hi, I've had a few probs with the injection light on my '94 55SX. After a few minutes of motorway use, the light comes on and the rev limit is reduced to 4500rpm (about 82mph). Car runs fine normally, and still pulls well up to 4500. Could this be a Lambda fault? Ocasionaly the light goes out for a few mins at a time, and the car performs fine then - in fact it's very quick for a puny 1.1, I've had 105mph out of it and there was a bit more to come!
Anyone know how to test the Lambda probe without resorting to a FIAT dealer?

BH49Q: I'd recommend you change garages - this is not normal behaviour for a car! I'm going to check my lambda sensor at the weekend, the general consensus seems to be that lambda's burn/wear ot and cause this kind of fault. And if I were you I'd change garages! Or preferably buy a good toolkit and a Punto workshop manual - this is one of the easiest cars I've ever worked on (and head gaskets are dead easy to replace yourself, I replaced one on a friend's 60S, it took me all of half an hour and £12 for a new gasket)!
(NOTE ON HEAD GASKETS: As soon as I bought my '94 55SX I re-torqued the head bolts as most of them were way out, and the head gasket has been fine since. I'd advise all you Punto owners to do the same!).

Thanks Jonny Boy im going to give them one last chance as this didnt happen before they did the gasket, but came on as soon as i had the car back so i think they should fix it.Would this problem occur because of anything they did while fixing the gasket?
Thanks again

hi i took my car to fiat and altho my car had the problem with the fuel ig lights coming on and going of 2 weeks ago the guy at fiat said the light should stay on and they should switch it off. so instead i bought a lambda sensor as from the fourum gave me most of the info as this hopefully is the problem. i shall let you all know what the out come is.
thanks

Refusing to start from cold can be a symptom of a missing sensor voltage to the ECU.

It's my understanding that the ECU will adopt "LOS" (limited operating strategy) on loss of signal(s).

While in this mode it will substitute warm engine values for the missing one(s).

For example if CTS (coolant temperature sensor) is out of limits it will assume the engine is warm, you won't get a rich mixture for starting: difficult to start, and poor cold running.

Once warmed up it will be near to normal, but not quite 100%.

You might find you can provoke it to start by giving it about 1/4 throttle when you try and start it...

All the above assumes the garage haven't broken something else [:0]

I finally got my punto sporting started the other day, after problems with it not starting from the injection system. so i took it straight to the fiat dealer in chepstow. They have confirmed it is the EGR Valve like Evil Punto suggested it might be. The car now runs, but it doesn't drive no where near as good as it should. Has anybody got any idea how much this EGR Valve costs? or how easy/hard it is to fit? your replys will be appreciated

I have a Punto SX75 "L" reg. The injection warning light has started to come on generally when the engine temperature hits about the halfway mark.

I have taken the car quickly to a friend's garage who explained that the lambda sensor can be dodgy. The sensor was covered in white which could easily be brushed off. It was diagnosed as probably having an air leak. However, after an examination none could be found...various parts of the air filter system etc were cleaned and checked and I was asked to see how the car ran.

Everything seemed fine but after a very long journey from home and back (about 500 miles) the injection warning light has come on again when the temperature hits the 1/2 way point.

There appears to be no loss in performance and fuel economy seems acceptable (this was checked by the mechanic)

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I have an appointment for a diagnostic check but any other avenues to explore before this would be appreciated.

Andy747 - The EGR valve is about £80 inc VAT and fitting is a doddle. You remove the battery leads, unplug the EGR plug, undo the 2 bolts holding it down and remove it. Get the new EGR (make sure you get a new metal gasket for a quid or so), the gasket goes between the EGR and the engine, tighten the 2 bolts up, replace the plug into the EGR and reconnect the battery. Take a drive down the motorway so the ECU can get used to your driving again.
