Hi,

Just inherited a 1998 Canary yellow Seicento Sporting with Abarth body kit. Usually buy German cars, sorry, so totally new experience for me dealing with this little Italian curio. Maybe great first car for my 16 year old.

Honest John web site has pic of it if you search for the make.

Going to take it to my mechanic so he can put it on a ramp to check on rust, car has already had sill welding - have a receipt - but also wanted to check what else I should look out for. There is rust around the windows and on various scraps on wheel arches. Also plastic body had a split from slight contact.

My impressions after 3 hours on a motorway to bring it home aren't great - slow, annoying pedal off set, brakes very spongy, gear selector like a pudding, rust around windows, down on power or perhaps just the way it is.

It's only done 36K and was used for supermarket trips only. Someone at Honest John mentioned it could be a classic, is this a joke? So is it worth some investment as was free?

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks,
J

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for replying. Yes, car hasn't been used since September last year but kept in a dry garage for the last ten years. Definitely needs some TLC but always starts first time and you can't miss it!

We bought a low miles one owner car

A lot less 'fun' than the cinq before it.. as the PAS and safety addition detract from its 'power'

Boy used it for 18 months.. happy enough at 80 for a couple of hours.. but the VED was ridiculous..

So he got a 1.3 diesel.. ( grew up.. ) ;)

Brakes probably just want to scrub clean.. but motor should be issue free

Plugs..fresh fuel.. clean filters

But it will still be 'fun' not fast

Charlie

It might be, over time. I think the Cinquecento Sporting has more chance of being classic soon, as they are few of them around. Less so the Seicento.

If you're bored and can put up with a bit of cringe, watch the Super Seicento series on YouTube, which follows a guy who got a yellow Sei Sporting as his first car. I'm not really a fan of the Seicento, too curvy for my taste, but this guy is so invested in them and it's interesting to see the bits and bobs he does that you can't help but start to appreciate the Sei a bit more.

Hi,

Think I might know the young man you mean, bless him. Loads of good stuff in there, good call, think he's got an Alfa now. My 16 yr old is already talking about mods, have explained the world of insurance to him.

I think when I last looked he still had the Seicento, but caused panic amongst his followers by posting a video called "Saying Goodbye" which was just about moving back home.

Amongst other things he has put a 1242cc Punto engine into it to give a bit more power.

I think he has an Alfa as well as the Seicento now.

He's selling the Alfa now. Once you get a taste for small Fiats, normal sized cars feel cumbersome :p
I just took a look and the bidding for his Alfa is at £920 with 19 hours to go. Anything above £1000 was going to charity.

I do actually find the Super Seicento videos quite addictive in a funny sort of way. I think it is his enthusiasm and attachement to his little yellow Seicento.
