Hello everyone,

As of today I'm the proud owner of a 2.4L Abarth (Petrol, Manual not Selespeed)

Unfortunately it's been sat idle for about 2-3 months outside in the rain and cold.

Picked it up today and the gear box is incredibly picky about selection.

5th is incredibly hard to get and it won't go into reverse and it won't center.

Can anyone give me a hand troubleshooting this?

I've heard that most of the issues are at the gearbox linkage side but it's very hard to get to the cables as there is a lot in the way.

Kind Regards, Adam.

My advice is:

1) Pull back the gearlever gaiter and spray some lubricant into that area
2) Try to apply lubricant to the ball joints at the gearbox end of the change cables
3) If that fails, change the gearbox oil
4) If still no improvement you probably need to replace the change cables.

Good luck!

Without wishing to sound like a tw@ - you do realise that despite being a 5 speed box it has a lift up reverse on it?

I would try greasing the rod and pin on the gearbox if it was me the Alfas are notorious for it.

The horizontal pin thats between gaskets 3 and 4 in that picture is likely your left right wiggle. On the Alfas they have little plastic bearings in the end of the casing but they don't look evidenced here.

I'd whip the nut off (10, 11, 12) and grease that up. Check for small top hat shaped black plastic things in the casing. Clean all the crap off it, grease like hell and refit.

Hey all,

Sorry about not responding, I've had a really crazy few months ( got divorced, new house etc :D )

The gearbox selector was seized up and the issue was solved by a good clean and grease.

Disconnect selector cables,
Remove the selector on top the box.
Greased the gears inside.
Reassembled.
Greased selector cables and squirt up the cable tubing.
New cable selector boots.

All done!

Took about an hour :)
