May I before everyone else hounds you out as an idiot!
The resistor mods being sold on ebay basically sit between the ECU and the air flow/temperature sensor. They then change the current being supplied to the ECU so the ECU thinks that the air is very cold. Therefore the ECU then, believing the air is cold, runs the car on what can only be described easily as "choke", i.e. it overfuels the engine to compensate. The upshot is, that you will burn more fuel and gradually coke up the head. Worse though, is that you may also cause what is known as "bore wash" where the overfuelling removes the lubrication of the pistons and causes engine wear. Basically..... DON'T DO IT!! Yes it will give you more power initially, but your ECU will start to compensate for the additional fuel being used via the information being sent by the Lambda sensor (this measures the air/fuel mixture in the exhaust) and will realise its being overfuelled and try to compensate for it - this really does screw things up! Lastly, you will see some positive feedback from buyers (usually Nova owners) who have either only received it or have fitted it and not tested it for more than a few miles.

Is it just me or is the picture in the first add of a turbo'd engine?

Theres alot here on what NOT to do, but has anyone got any recomendation on what to do?

Love this

Fiat Bravo +9BHP
Fiat Brava +8BHP

Is that the difference an extra two doors make? :)

I think the huge amount of negative feedback from the people that have actually used it shows the real truth

Tom,

1 grand on a 1.8

would would you get and whats the costs breakdown.

what about with an extra budget of £500?

But cheaper to insure than both. well, actually, the jtd in standard form is pretty similar to that of the 1.8, normally. since i imagine its quite dificult to prove you retuned a diesel, i think someone bolder than me could get away with not declaring it. which makes the jtd a very good option, if you can find one.

from the advice offered, ill defo stay away from these things

Cheers guys

Just so you know Mr 1.8 modder (forgot your name sorry)

Lokk at getting an alfa 1.8ts head and ignition,,, the end result will be 144bhp BEFORE any chip/Piggyback/exhaust ec.... this is what i was going to do but never had the money to through at it! i think there is alot of potential in the 1.8, just need to figure out how to get at it!!!!

All the best mate!

Paul R

(p.s. i ended up selling the 1.8 and getting a 147 HGT)

Cheers Paul-R

the 1.8ts head eh?

Is the block (and therefor all the oil/water ways) the same then?

Wouldnt this need a different ecu (piggy) to run this from the first turn of the key?

Has this been done before?

cheers for the info

As tom says you need the ecu!

As far as i know it hasnt been done! but from talking to independant fiat/alfa specialists they think it should be straight forward...aparently its the same block!

I would spend the cash on a piggy back and then you will be talking lots of power! i think (tom WILL correct me!) 144bhp with head + piggy back ecu (easier to get it programmed custom to your engine!) should be atleast 155+... and if you are really keen you can get some cams in there aswell! 160+ with the piggy back i think (15bhp from cams and a piggy back is quite a reasonable expectation i think!)...

Look into it more! Get down a breakers and ask if you can leave a deposit on a head, take it and compare it to the fiat one! if it fits pay the rest! if not take it back (probably lose your deposit but at least you will know!)

Do they make cams for the t-spark head? I think its pretty highly tuned already so gains might be minimal.

Generally the more BHP/ltr a non-turbo engine has the harder it is to increase it further. The 1.8 t-spark has more BHP/ltr than the 155HGT.

Thats true!

Still, 160 with cams and piggy back? you not agree?
