I beleive the application process is something akin to:

Get a form
Get a historian to decipher ancient rune language
Sacrifice your first born
Wait till the sun is in line with the 4th meridian
Phone up for advice
Cry
Give Up
Put form in dark drawer for 6 months
Try again
Succeed in filling in form
Get snotty call from stupid person
get £1.50 a week in tax relief
Go postal!

Hurrah, have just got my payslip and found out that due to payrise (good) I am now into the high rate tax band (bad) and I don't even earn that much :(. Every silver lining has a cloud. Nice company are doing their best to screw taxman though by making contributions to my pension on my behalf in lieu of some of my pay so it doesn't show up on the paycheck - I can reap the benefits of non-payment in another oooooooooohhh 45 years or so!

How I remember my student days of being in the 10% tax band Smurfhead, enjoy it while you can :).

Hmmm, surely it is irrelevent to the company what level of tax you pay - their cost of your employment is your gross pay + employers NIC + pension contributions!
Silver cloud is surely getting your payrise in Month 12/Week 52 - have to wait until next payslip for mine!!!!

It's a small company and we all get on well so of course my boss is going to reduce my tax burden by any means possible nice bloke that he is. Pleased to hear you have also had a payrise Stuart. Sadly I got my payslip 3 weeks before I got the pay - I get it on 20th but we got payslip ealy to indicate what we would be getting.

OK, sounds fair enough to me!
Personally, I would rather get extra pay in my pay packet and suffer 41% tax/nic; this leaves me 59% to do with whatever I want. Then again, I don't have the option of money being re-directed into my pension scheme :(
